I visited the restaurant with 4 friends last week. The food was simple and utterly delicious. All of us are massive foodies, so they had to do quite a job to impress us.
We started with saltfish and ackee wrapped in fried plantain which was sweet, salty and very tasty. The saltfish fritters we tried next were surprisingly 'bready', but dipped into the supplied chilli sauce and salad cream were utterly addictive . Both West Indian classics worked very well and made us thirsty for our cold Red Stripe beers.
We were disappointed that the braised cow foot was not on the menu that night (available Friday & Saturday), but the curry oxtail and curry goat were both available which were ordered with excited trepidation. Both came with the traditional rice and peas which was light, fluffy and had a delicious coconut edge. The oxtail was braised with black beans, thyme and whole scotch bonnet chillies and was finished with some classic spinner dumplings. It melted in the mouth and easily surpassed the flavour of my mother's Western version of braised oxtail (sorry mum). Heaven. It was mopped up with some steamed and peeled yams and dumplings (hard food) and some more fried plantain.
The goat curry, like the oxtail was cooked on the bone and melted in the mouth. It was a revelation. I am quite confident when I say that it is the best food I have eaten in a restaurant in a very long time. Despite the food, the service was really excellent too. Well done all! The only downpoint of the restaurant was that we were denied any recipes due to them bring secret! Fair enough.
