El Vergel

My boyfriend discovered El Vergel a few years ago, and we've been going there several times a week ever since. It has yet to disappoint. The food is simply excellent - wonderful fresh ingredients - and the staff are fantastic. Moreover, it's ridiculously cheap.
When we got engaged, there was no doubt about who we wanted to do the catering. Stella Garcia and her team put on the most delicious and beautifully displayed nibbles and paella and salads and cheesecake for 250 without a hitch.

Ok, so it's not open for dinner or on weekends (I think it's 8.30am to 3pm on weekdays). Ok, so there's a scrummage getting in and then the 'restaurant' bit is basically one long table where everyone eats together.
But, as has been said before, this place does the best steak sandwich in the world - really thin steak served in 'Chilean village bread' (kinda like very flavourful ciabatta), with excellent salsa, and melted cheese or perfectly ripe avocado.
Also excellent, cheap coffee (£1), and amazing empanadas (pasties, basically) with feta cheese and spinach.
It's down an unassuming side-street, but always has a queue out the door - it survives on an excellent and well-deserved reputation.

El Vergel is only open for breakfast and lunch, and you won't find a tastier lunchtime bite anywhere near. It is a takeawy with s a couple of tables, and they kick ass. You wont find better anywhere near, but you'd be a muppet to trek across town, its a local lunch stop?!

After reading some glowing recommendations I just had to go and try out El Vergel. To my surprise it is more of a take-out cafe than restaurant. The menu consists mainly of sandwiches and Latin snacks like quesadillas and burritos. I had one of the few non-sandwich dishes (shrimp in garlic sauce) and the house-special salad with Feta: both were ok and utterly ordinary. So if you want to have a quick bite for lunch this place is ok, but it definitely is not worth going out of your way to!
