What a great find!! One of the best dinners i've had in London.

The hare pie to share was the stand out dish, the whole table enjoyed the theatre of it even though it was only for two of us share. As well as this the wine list is very interesting, we were recommended a wine that i had'nt heard of, it was very interesting and went very well with the food.

The service was very good, someone always seemed to be there when we wanted but never hovering over your shoulder like some other restaurants.

I last wrote a review of this restaurant in 2007 and was pretty complimentary.

I returned on Tuesday as part of a party of 4. We all agreed that the food was fantastic - my rare venison was delicious and a chocolate tart was velvety smooth and not too heavy. Portion sizes were just right and the menu was interesting and varied. The vibe is that of a pleasant, intimate and upmarket bistro.

With a main and a pudding each, a bottle of wine and some aperitifs including service charge, it was about £40 each. So not cheap but not hugely expensive either. I would definitely be back.

If this restaurant was in a trendy spot north of the river it would be much more lauded than it currently is. A midweek dinner was a memorable experience, with both starters and mains imaginatively designed and skilfully prepared. (We don't do puddings so cannot comment.) Service was unhurried and discreet. A little gem - long may it remain below the radar!

Very good starters, OK mains. Decent puds. Main problem is the portion sizes, which for some of the dishes (particularly pig cheek) were downright mean. This must be the only time I've emerged from a 3-course meal hungry. Service was slow. The cooking is decent and I want to recommend the restaurant... but I really can't.

Had dinner at Magdalen after a year absence, and they continue to produce top meals. Asparagus soup was rich and flavourful and the Veal mains were simply perfect. Cheese selection was top notch, and the wine list was well priced. It's great to see a restaurant keep the cooking at such a high level after 4 years, but the service is still extremely slow. Dinner for two spanned uncomfortably over 3.5 hours on a Wednesday night, not aided by the hard bistro chairs. We remembered why we stopped frequenting the restaurant as much as we did when they first opened - we can't spare that much time!

Four of us went for lunch this week to celebrate my daughters birthday. I really wish I had chosen elswhere. Small portions of very underwhelming food. I felt we had paid a lot of money for nothing to shout about.

Had lunch today. First class service. Set lunch very good value for money. Good quality wines by the glass. Will definitely go again - very soon!

Cheese and Biscuits

Cheese and Biscuits - 9/10

Tuesday, July 05, 2011 - Detractors amongst you will point out that for the prices they charge at Magdalen, you would hope the cooking is at least very good. And yes, while not being anywhere near unreasonable, it is perhaps more than you could spend in some local restaurants. But cooking of this style and quality - accessible, unpretentious, terrific cooking; cooking of warmth, flavour and spirit, not perfect but always enjoyable, this is not something you find in every neighbourhood.

Friday, July 24, 2009 - I can never resist pigeon because when it's cooked right, it's pretty much duck-meets-steak. Magdalen's was spot-on tender and juicy...After so much tasty, hearty food, I would normally have skipped dessert. But feeling decadent, I tried the French toast and ice cream, which was well worth the ten thousand gazillion calories' worth of butter and cream in there...Overall, the cooking and service at Magdalen were wonderful, and I loved the availability of wines by the carafe.
