I have to say I agree with Nick W below. This is an overpriced restaurant serving an average steak and chips. My steak was also butterflied which I could not understand the point of. I'm in the organic meat industry and thought the flavour of the meat should have been better for the price. Maybe it hadn't been hung for long enough. We also had to send one of the steaks back as it was such poor quality you wouldn't feed it to a dog. I certainly won't be rushing back as I think there are better steaks all over London and can only assume that the people who have given this place the rave reviews below, have been duped by it's re-assuringly expensive prices.

One of the best, if not the best steak you will get in London. Highly recommended. No idea what planet the reviewer below is from. What on earth does he expect a Steak House to serve. Presumably he would find fault with a specialist fish restaurant for not having a large choice of meats

I really can't understand the ridiculous review i just read below. The comment of 'average steak' in particular encouraged me to write this review and I ask London Eating to remove this ASAP - It is obvoiusly from a rival restaurant who has lost too much business. May i say that this is a Steak house, it is called Popeseye 'Steak House' it is a very simple concept. If you fancy smoked salamon followed by grilled chicked then don't come to a Steakhouse ! May i also say that they do offer fish if your pre-order (if you have a veggie in your group).

I have easten steak in USA, Argentina, Brazil and Australia as well as a number of fine restaraunts in central London and let me just say that the quality of steak here is far beyond 'average' and easily justifies its price tag. For the writer who beleives that for around £20 this is poor value then i suggest he goes to a Weatherspoons and buys their 10oz sirloin and chips for £5.69. He obviously doesn;t have a palette for fine cuts of meat and therefore shouldn;t waste his money here.

As for the lack of starters - beleive me you don't need them !! Save yourself for the main event.

I plead carnivours to come here at least once; it is up there with the best of them.

The only let down is the location and journey to the toilet.

What a miserable man (see below). I completely disagree! Before visiting this place i didnt see the point of steak just a massive lump of meat not very exciting. Popesyes changed all that, I took my boyfriend their as steak is his favourite and I throughly enjoyed it. The steak was cooked perfectly and was not butterflyed as described below, the chips were yummy and the sauce sufficent. You dont need loads of sauces when the steak is this tasty. The wine list was great and i enjoyed a good glass of house white.

I will admit that i dont know much about steak having rarely eaten it before but I do know puddings and i can say without any shadow of a doubt that Popseyes serve the best Chocolate brownie anywhere I have been and i have had a few.

The brownie was chewy on the outside and perfectly gooey on the inside, made from high cocoa mass chocolate it had a rich intense chocolate flavour. To die for!! I go back just for the brownies and ice cream.

Simplicity of food I understand but this place shows pure lack of imagination.

No starters - is this supposed to be a positive?

Just steak and chips with no other choices - Is this a positive?

All this guy is doing is selling average steak and chips at about £30 a head. It is the first thing that any student learns to cook. And he butterflies the steak and then folds it back over. All this says to me is that he doesn't know when a good sized steak is cooked.

I bet if you asked him to cook spag bol he'd struggle. It would be a good new programme for Ramsay.

As for the condiments, a huge plate of mustards, ketchup and bearnaise (not freshly made but from a jar) sat on the table. Is this good dining? Pop Larkin would like it!

Don't bother going and getting your pants pulled off for the most basic meal you will ever have at a high price. It is a marketing dream. They can't cook so they just put one thing on the menu, and people like Cundall are falling for it hook, line and sinker.

This place is easily one of the finest restaurants to dine at in London.

If superb cuts of meat, amazing chips and a range of mustards and sauces to die for are your thing, then get in here. Not cheap but still a third of the price compared to many places that serve much lesser quality of meal with rubbish wine to boot.

I was always told that this place was one of the best steak houses in the world. Big words I thought as I waited for my steak. They were wrong, it is the best steak house I have ever visited, without exception.

The problem with reviewing this restaurant is where to start praising it? As you walk in you realise that it is a quirky, intimate place - simple tables, candles, no over-head lighting. We were instantly seated by a very friendly and attentive (not overly attentive) waitress. I ordered a 12oz fillet, my girlfriend ordered a smaller fillet and we waited for our food whilst sampling a bottle of the fantastic house red - we went for the house as it is always so good, although the wine list is superb to say the least! The steaks arrived, accompanied by chips (proper chips, not French fries I am glad to say) and a tray full of sauces/mustards. We both fought over who could put the most delicious bernaise onto our plate and scoffed the lot. It truly is the only place, dare I say a Mecca, for good quality steak.

I think the thing I liked most, after the top quality meat was the fact that it almost sticks two fingers up at more fancy restaurants with its beautiful simplicity, such as -

i) No white wine on the menu - rightly so!

ii) No starters

iii) No fancy cuts - just fillet, sirloin or rump

iv) Only served with chips and salad

v) Deserts are purely 'school dinners' in nature - sticky toffee pudding etc. all perfectly made

Also, if like me you find bernaise sauce to be the very elixir of life, not only do you get a huge ramekin of it, you can always re-load as many times as you like. How good is that?!

In short, this place is remarkable. Show it some respect and go there tonight. You will not be disappointed. You'll love it.

what can I say, I have eaten a lot of steaks and this is right up there with the best of them. Perfectly cooked, lovely chips, and even house wine is drinkable while being reasonably priced

Cheese and Biscuits

Cheese and Biscuits - 3/10

Monday, September 29, 2008 - The menu at Popeseye in Kensington reads like a steak-lover's dream. Three different cuts of meat each served in five different sizes, and that's it. Chips come whether you like them or not, and the only additional side is a £3.95 bowl of salad. It is a menu that quite simply has everything going for it, and it was therefore all the more of a crushing disappointment to eventually taste the food.
