When we walked past this restaurant on Essex Road, the interiors looked pretty decent so we thought we'd give it a try. We mostly go out dining on upper street, but it's a bit further to walk, so we were really happy a 'good' restaurant had opened up on Essex road. Unfortunately this restaurant isn't up to the upper street standards, and for the price we really felt ripped off. We were the only people in there, and to be honest we won't be going back. I can't see this restaurant lasting long.

Went there last week with a bunch of friends. We had to wait ages for starters and main courses - not sure if the lady who took our orders was the cook as well - this might have been the reason. The food was lovely and it's a nice place to eat

There is no doubt that this establishment could have real potential. The combination of relaxed East African style seating with the promise of authentically served Eritrean dishes generated considerable excitement as we stepped through the door. Sadly our anticipation was gradually eroded by poor service and ridiculous waiting times; both ongoing problems judging from the previous reviews on this site. Our starters, which essentially consisted of a feta salad, pitta and hummus, took around 50 minutes to be served. Seriously, I could have run to the local Tesco, bought the ingredients and assembled the dishes myself in a quarter of the time! Once the mains had arrived, some 1h20 mins later, our flagging interest levels were mildly piqued by the sight of the huge Injera pancakes on which all the food is served off. However the waitress ignored our requests to keep the meat and fish dishes seperate which resulted one member of our party being unable to enjoy most of the meal. The final insult was to be told that the machine required to process the extensive list of accepted credit cards was actually broken despite a complete lack of prior warning! What frustrates most is that, shoddy service and long waiting times aside, the uniqueness and flavour of the dishes could have made this place a real find. The mains, whilst somewhat small in portion, were generally very interesting, with a truly individual blend of tastes and textures. Unfortunately however, this restaurant has simply far too many basic flaws to merit a recommendation.

Cheese and Biscuits - 8/10

Wednesday, August 11, 2010 - Starters of timtimo rolls and kategna were excellent. The rolls were soft and sour and contained a lovely dense filling of lentils, sort of a thick Eritrean dhal. And the kategna turned out to be delicate crispy squares of fried injera sprinkled with chilli powder...Mains included Quanta Fit-Fit, a delicious concoction consisting of dried beef cooked in the house chilli sauce and mixed up with a few pieces of the ubiquitous injera and Dulet - powerfully flavoured lamb tripe mixed with garlic, chilli and fresh herbs.
