This was our second visit to L'Autre as the first time we had a reasonable Polish meal. This time we decided to go Mexican and it was the biggest mistake. More than the actual flavour of the dishes it was the presentation. They couldn't possibly have fitted more on to our plates and there was everything and anything on it that I couldn't even find what I had ordered. Most annoying was the owner who tried to tell me that there was no point in ordering Mexican if I didn't like spicy food. Obviously he knows nothing about the food from Mexico as I have eaten numerous Mexican meals and there are plenty for me to choose from which are not spicy! Amazing the high opinion he has of his place especially when you read the reviews. And it wasn't cheap. We certainly would not go back nor would we recommend it to any of our friends. We wouldn't want to lose them.

Recently ate at l'Autre and having never bothered to write a review online before I feel compelled to come online and warn people off. I guess the Polish/Mexican combination should have been cautionary in itself but it seemed like a popular, albeit slightly crazy, choice. However, the results were unapolegetically slow service and pretty much inedible, as well as overpriced, food.

We weren't alone in our opinions either as we bonded with the couple on the next table over quite how disastrous the cooking was. Given the hundreds of alternative places to eat in London I urge you to try somewhere else.

I lived in London 10 yrs ago and for 3 years met here with my friends and in doing so met alot of Polish people that where regulars, they also became my friends. I have known the now owner for over 10 years.

So if I get the chance when in London this will always be my first choice of a restaurant to go out on a date or take my parents/friends to.

Go for the Polish food and soak up the aptmoshere, then finish off the evening with Zubrovka.

Try it, enjoy it, then become a regular or addicted.

Simply put, you cannot visit London and not stop at L'Austre to enjoy lunch and dinner! The service is exceptional. The food is remarkable and suprisingly wonderful. The prices are more than reasonable and I'd actually call it a bargain. I enjoyed the Game Feast with a fine bottle of wine. I enjoyed the Polish Cheesecake for dessert when combined with the mint leaves gave me an experience I just had to share. My evening was consumated by a glass of 1988 Porto Fonseca, Vintage Port. The only other item on the menu I coveted was the 1907 Mouton Cadet Rothschild, which is being held in reserve for a special occasion I presume. All in all, a must when you are living or visiting London. This is the best kept secret for lunch in all of London.

My friend and I decided to risk the polish-mexican mix. Since we both had some good mexican food in the last month back in the US (we're yanks) we thought that the chilly wet evening called for comfort food.

She had the chicken and mushroom blinis and I had the house special of pot roast. I was thrilled to bits with the pot roast, gravy, mash and veg. She really liked her blinis.

Service was fine, not exceptional, but it's not that sort of place. It is cozy (small and a bit cramped) but we really enjoyed ourselves.

Don't know if I would try the mexican if there is a next time we are in the area, but I would go here again especially with a few friends.

Prices were reasonable for the area.

I'm easily pleased when it comes to food but this was a shocking meal. My blini starter was inoffensive though obviously micro-waved but my roast wild boar main course was awful.

It arrived after about 40 minutes, steaming like a cow pat on a winters morning and had the mouth melting temperature that only a really sustained microwaving session can provide. The consistency suggested it had been tinned and boiled in a previous life. Crusty mashed potato and miserably limp beans were half heartedly slapped next to it.

My girlfiend's Mexican dish, I think an enchilada, came still nestled on the kind of mini-dishes that fit in a micro-wave so the mystery was why we waited so long for what had clearly only taken a few minutes zapping to re-heat. Nearby I could see another customers lamb shank looking as hot, rubbery and unpleasant as my boar had been.

If this kind of meal was served up in a pub for £3.99 you couldn't really complain but, although prices in L'Autre are not expensive, these were not bargain basement prices either - I think the boar was £17.00.

I really wanted to like this place, but having shunned all the other Sherpherd's market eateries last Wednesday I was very disappointed. Atmosphere ok in it's own kitsch way but too cramped, had to wave flag to get any attention from female owner (the guy seemed more keen to please) and food was bad. I had Polish dumplings (which I've had before elsewhere and enjoyed) and left about a quarter of them - something i rarely do! For once in London £45 for two including a couple of drinks didn't seem like that good valule.
