After searching for 'something different' that would not break the bank we came across Poppy Hana, the reviews were good and as my son whose birthday it was loves Japanese food we found ourselves there celebrating his 13th birthday.

It did not disappoint, we all had different starters all good followed by generous bento boxes which were delicious.

If you like Japanese food and don't want to pay a fortune this could be the place for you. so give it a try!

The area isn't the best place to park because the restaurant is on the main road and the side roads are where the council estates were located. Though the atmosphere was nice and the waiter who served us was funny and attentive. He made a few jokes when opening the Ramune (you have to push the marble in to open - soda drink) and I was able to order my favorite japanese drink Calpico (sweet milky drink)!

HOWEVER, the sushi was very disappointing. The pieces were like half the size of normal pieces. Also, the salmon nigris were WARM and I'm assuming it's because they took it from their conveyor belt so it probably sat there for a while (the restaurant has a mini conveyor belt section as well as normal seating tables). The yellowtail wasn't nice. I told the manager who apologised and told me that she would inform the chef. I would have felt better if she took the yellowtail off our bill but I couldn't be bothered to argue.

We ordered other things such as scallop nigris, tobiko nigris, mackrel nigris, soft shell crab rolls etc that were okay. The salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi and tempura roll were nice.

We didn't taste their cooked food but their sushi is not worth returning again. We did go there on a Tuesday when Weds/Thurs is usually the fish day (when the fresh fishes arrive!) but personally, if you are willing to pay for this then I would recommend Ginza Restaurant in Greenwich whose service is just as good and the sushi is much tastier e.g. caterpillar roll (soft shell crab roll wrapped around with avocado) is super yum!

This restaurant opened up a new dining experience for me by offering a wider variety of Japanese food at very reasonable prices.

Its a great local and friendly restaurant with attentive and helpful staff and its child friendly.

Love the Katsu and the Yaki Udon- and the Prawns in Tempura are gorgeous..

Also enjoy the theatrical nature of the way some of the food is presented...

We are really luck to have this on our doorstep and its become a regular 'Friday night after a long week' haunt. Parking is nice and easy too in the evenings and weekends..dont be intimidated by its location....

I've eaten here several times - This is a one off family run place. The owners actually work there which makes a huge difference to the quality of service and the food that's served.

The sushi there is really good, as well as the Japanese curries they do. Everyone is really friendly - this is a great place for people eating on their own or in a group and I've seen families with young children happily eating there. It's also located just a few steps from Bermondsey Tube Station which makes it really easy to get to.

Poppy Hana is a 'Japanese restaurant with Fusion' in Bermondsey, SE16 (just next to the tube station) and is a fantastic addition to the area. The restaurant is nicely designed, with clear Japanese/minimalist influences, and the staff are extremely friendly and accomodating (on my first trip I made the mistake of ordering the seafood ramen (I don't like seafood!) and they happily replaced it free of charge). The food is also excellent. My favourites are the chicken miso ramen, which is part of the fusion range (nice and spicy), and the chicken yakisoba. My friends also rate the sushi/sashimi as being fresh, high-quality and well priced. They also do fresh juices, which are delicious.

If you don't fancy going out, they also do free delivery for orders over £15 within a 3 mile radius. The food always arrives piping hot and, if as happened a few weeks ago they are even a few minutes late, you might even get a free drink!

Highly recommended.
