If you wana go to 1997 to enjoy some "high class chinese restaurant" amosphere, then you are in a wrong place. 1997 is one of those typical everyday life chinese restaurant in asia, you go there to enjoy the culture then those fancy celebration.. its the same as going to some good old pub to have some chuncky old fries, not necessary good, but its classic!. the best dish from 1997 i would recomand is " fu-ken fried rice", its quality food...almost is the best out of china! I'v tried so many place in china town for this dish ,and 1997 is the best! its dark sauce with diced duck ,squid and some pepper on the egg fried rice..the price is good, its big enough to share for two....go there for this dish, try it,its goooood!~~~

Used to go there, but when we discovered Cafe du Hong Kong we rarely go there now. But it's still open if you fancy hot food at 4:00am after clubbing.
The food is definitely not exceptional, pretty much average but the good thing is - you can get a range of Chinese style dishes and Hong Kong style soup noodle or rice noodle.
A range of Chinese style drinks, relatively good Chinese milk-tea whether it's hot or cold!
Service is average and I think they did try to put an effort to the atmosphere.
Cheap and reasonable food. Good for a quick lunch or dinner, but don't expect anything magical!

Average chinese resturant. The food was of mediocre standard. The veggie starter for £11.50pp was a bit much considering all we got was a starter of a very modest portion size and quality, and a bowl of rice (which was too greasy) with 3 small dishes.

we go to 1997 very often for the said 'steamed chicken' dish which we love because it is actually a very good version of the famous singaporean hainanese chicken rice. it's not terribly good value for money and the service isn't fantastic, but for singaporeans away from home, it's the closest thing to being back. the pi pah tou fu and the iced tea with tapioca pearls are lovely as well.
i'd also like to point out that if anyone is looking for a 'healthy' food option, a chinese restaurant in leicester square isn't the best or cleverest option.

Have found myself here a couple of times following a few jars in central London. It's not bad if you're lucky enough to get a seat upstairs and order something idiot-proof like a standard chow mein. However, the food is unnecessarily greasy. My final visit there caught me during a health-kick phase and I order the "steamed chicken on boiled rice". When this arrived, the healthy-sounding dish, presented me with chicken that was (although cooked) cold in the middle and the entire dish had oil poured all over (for only what I can assume was the purpose of making it greasy)! My verdict: only visit this place if you are very very drunk and everywhere surrounding is full.

The only restaurant opens 24 hours in Chinatown. I'd say go there if you have no choice. There are plenty great restaurants at Chinatown, go for others.

More an oriental MacDonald's to go to at 3am after clubbing than a restaurant. Nevertheless the food is good, especially when you are half drunk, the service is mediocre and the price is cheap.
Would recommend it if you fancy a midnight snack or feeling pretty legless and need something to soak up the alcohol.

This restaurant is disgusting. What's more the waiters are rude and overcharged us £18 for terrible food. Avoid this restaurant like the plague!
