Wong Kei

Everytime I go to London the name Wong Kei always appear on my to do list. With a plethora of choices in the surrounding areas and myself no longer being a student on a budget, why do I go back there? You won't find the best Chinese food in London here, the decor isn't particularly appealing and the service won't win any awards, but try as I might, I cannot resist popping in for a comforting meal. Is it nostalgia, the big portions or the unique tasting soup base for the noodle soups? Maybe the simple answer is that Wong Kei is, well, Wong Kei. It is unique itself and doesn't aspire to be anything else, and with the staff now wearing the infamous "upstairs/downstairs" t-shirts instead of white shirts, maybe they know that is the true secret of the success of Wong Kei too.

We were almost disappointed not to find the legendary rude waiters - everyone was more than charming and the food excellent and copious. Not the place for a romantic meal, but a serious eating house that all of us would go back to.

Why on earth do people come here expecting a proper restaurant? It's LIKE A CAFE, just like you would get in Hong Kong!!!
You go in, eat - have a quick chat, pay and go. It's not a place to impress your loved ones, but a proper place to get good quality grub at very good prices.
Trust me, order these: roast pork and crispy pork with rice, beef and veg ho fun, won ton noodle soup or soya chicken noodle soup, 1/4 aromatic duck.
Don't bother with the starters, they're pants, but stick to the above as this is the straple stuff they do best.

How this dump could be among the top-10 best restaurants of London is, quite frankly, beyond me. There is nothing remotely noteworthy about this place. Avoid, unless you are totally skint and not fussy.

ordered lunch including half a duck to go ..the other item was alright, however, it was quite a surprise to find out its not half a duck inside the container
there 're bits and pieces of some duck but its no half duck there
i did receive a portion of roast duck instead of half duck i ordered from other places in London, however, it was not even a portion of duck there ..i wonder what kinda "mistake" that could be?
the time was around half one in the afternoon and the date was 1st of August (last Sunday) in case Wong Kei is reading this
i would like to approach the restaurant to find out what happened to my order, but i am not making a special trip into London for that

Wong Kei is pretty good for a student with little cash, but wants to impress his friends with nice food at a great price. I had no problem with the staff.
However, the atmosphere was a bit dull, but oh well.
Wong Kei is a good restaurant.

My parents used to visit the Wong Kei in the 90's, where they used to chase you out with machettes for being a copper. The Wong Kei got its name from having rude staff, and according to my mum, the staff are not as rude as they used to be. Indeed, when I have been and left my food to go to the loo, I came back with my bowl still there, which never would have happened. It's supposed to be quite a brash restaurant. The food, however, is lovely, and there is plenty of it.
The toilets are not very nice, but tell me of a place that does good value food that does have lovely toilets?

Wong Kei I have been coming to for 10 years or so. It is dreary, dated and the waiters rarely furnish even a casual flourish of attention.
That last factor is the most consistent aspect together with the splendid, often plentiful food portions. The food here never disappoints and it's a convivial setting for friends but not for lovers. I recommend this restaurant overall but the place looks dilapidated, the tables are communal and in truth it's not for everyone.

I was recommended to go to the place and I and my family thought we had walked into the wrong restaurant. It is now officially the worst restaurant I have even been to. Let’s start from the beginning; the look of the place from the outside is dirty and grubby.
There is nothing remotely nice about the restaurant inside, nor the disgusting toilets covered in graffiti and lacking any kind of soap. The staff lacked any kind of social skills or table side etiquette, and were happy to place me and my family alongside other members of the public at the same table.
However, that does not really bother me though; it was the food that now makes this place a great story to tell people as it was totally revolting. I cannot say one good thing about the food at the place. The noodles were hard, the soup was bitter, the rice was bland, the sauces were sickly, the presentation was appalling, the spring rolls were greasy, and the crispy seaweed was soggy. I am not a critical person, just someone who appreciates nice food, and at least clean surroundings. If your restaurant is not clean, what is your kitchen like?
This place is terrible, I am never going back.
