I wasn't sure what to expect after some of the mixed reviews, but I was really pleasantly surprised by how good Gastro was.
My boyfriend and I had the chateaubriand which was cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious!
Our waiter was excellent, despite the restaurant being really busy.
Highly recommended!

I went there friday morning and I'm sorry to say but it was awful with the manageress who was there saying "chaud, chaud"all the time and she was pretty useless with the service as well as smiling for some reason. thank's not.

I only went here for a coffee, but the atmosphere is great. Very french, very seafood. It's low key, rustic, and extremely friendly. A glance at the wine and food menus revealed prices from around 15 for food, and the same for wine, with prices going up quickly. I'd expect 50+ per person for a nice meal here. That said, it looked worth it. Who knows?
I'll be back, at least for a coffee again!

Gastro is my new favourite restaurant! I gave a surprise dinner for a friend's birthday here last night and we had a fantastic time. Apart from anything else, it's absolutely lovely inside & like having a day trip to France!! The atmosphere is great and it's absolutely perfect for a party.
The staff at Gastro are absolutely charming and very helpful. When I first rang them to book the table they could not have been more accomodating, and when we arrived last night, they'd set the table up for us beautifully because we'd told them it was a birthday. Nothing put them out - they let us arrive an hour before our booking to decorate, and allowed us to cover the restaurant in balloons and streamers, sorted out a birthday cake for us and all pitched in singing Happy Birthday at the end. We were quite a rowdy party and people came and went, ordering food at different times, but nothing seemed too much trouble and all the staff were smiling and helpful throughout - even when we were still sitting at the table at midnight, and then wanted to pay with 12 different credit cards.
I can't understand the complaints some of the reviewers have had about the food here, - everyone in our party was pleased. I had the most delicious carpaccio I've ever tasted and some very good fish - all the shellfish was very fresh, the steaks all looked excellent and they were happy to cook them any way they were asked, from nearly raw to shoeleather. Amazingly, since there were such a lot of us, everything arrived at the table piping hot. As for the birthday cake.....its lucky it was big enough to give everyone two slices...divine!
I don't say that Gastro is a cheap restaurant, but I don't think £55 is outrageous for three well-cooked courses and a huge amount of wine, coffee and various other things. And they are generous with the bread and butter.... Its true, you sometimes have to go up to the bar if you want something, but once you have asked for it, it appears immediatly. And I much prefer that to the awfulness of waiters hovering over the table asking if everything is ok every 5 minutes, which seems to be the norm in most English restaurants these days.
I can't recommend Gastro's highly enough & I can't wait for someone else to have a birthday so we can all treat ourselves again

I went with a group of about 15 people for sunday lunch. I was anticipating terrible service on the basis of the reviews on this website but I found the service to be charming, albeit a bit slow. The food was good but not excellent but the atmosphere is great. I do not live nearby and would not cross London to specifically go there again but if I was in the area I would head there without hesitation.

My partner and i read disparaging reviews of this restaurant, but we were pleasantly surprised with this fine, warm eaterie. Tradition french bistro fare was complimented by friendly service and delightful interior. The mussels were large and delicious, the homemade fries particularly delicious. Definitely leave room for the sumptuous puddings.

Was so looking forward to eating here, had been nagging my friends to visit for ages, but how disappointed can one person be. My starter of crab was fine; however, the salad was horrid and tasteless. My friend's leek, bacon and poached egg salad was frankly horrible, far too watery and reminiscent of school dinners. Main course - let's not go there! Cold and uninspired. This place keeps receiving business, so has become complacent. One more important point to add, it is ridiculously expensive for the food they produce. Needless to say, this is one customer who will not return. Hopefully my experience was a one off..

I've now been to this restaurant 4 times and have mixed feelings. It's always busy with friendly waiters and the atmosphere is undeniably French. It makes me feel like I've taken a step into a rural bistro! We've never been hurried even though it is often full and the service is helpful with lots of smiling faces. I would say the food can vary but on the whole is very good. I love the salmon with tarrogan mousse that I had last and am thinking of replaying it at a dinner party! Now, I would definitely call that a compliment to a restaurant when the diner wants to take away the receipe. However, we did get ignored once when we chose to sit away from the bar and waiters and the service was slow verging on painful. All in all though, I would recommend it and will continue to go back

I have eaten here a few times and agree with some of the comments above. The main thing is that the food is pretty good, but not good enough to justify the considerably hefty prices. £20 for Halibut that is not quite hot enough and probably not as fresh as it could be is too much in my book. Wine by the glass is also seriously hiked in price. Nice atmosphere and service pretty good, but I think if I'm going to spend £60 on a meal with my girlfriend then I would be tempted to take the suggestion of someone above and look at other restaurants in the area.
