Three of us visited the restaurant yesterday evening (27th Aug 08) to celebrate a friends belated birthday before she returned to Germany. The restaurant was recommended by friends of mine who live close by.

We were very impressed. The food was great as was the service. I do not eat meat and as a fish lover it suited me down to the ground. My friends were equally bowled over and we will visit again! They particularly liked the apple crumble though they preferred custard to cream - oh well c'est la vie!!

One small nag - the seats were rather hard, especially if you're sitting for some time enjoying a good meal. I had to get cushions from my car!!!

We have had three wonderful take aways and raved about the place but today we too are very dissatisfied! what has happened? I know its sunday but if you can't keep up the standards don't open up on a sunday!

Staff were sloppy and surly, the food was soggy and greasy and we threw it all away.

I'm sure it was because the wonderful owners weren't there as i know they have very high standards!

The saving grace was that when we called to complain they apologised and immediately offered a full refund which we can collect at our leisure. We're not sure if we'll return but the refund does help. Maybe on a week day.

The fish and chips served here are some of the best my boyf and I have ever tasted. Chips cooked in beef dripping, huge pieces of thick, flaky, white fish cooked to perfection, a trio of pickles (egg, wally and onion) and a hefty portion of mushy peas is a 10/10 meal. We also like the atmosphere created by the chip shop section of the restaurant, which means this place is always buzzy. You can also book the tables outside which is nice. The specials menu items haven’t been consistently great; an Asian fish with rice and ginger sadly lacked any meat on its bones (purely due to the type of fish, so not recommended for hungry eaters). But twice my Sea Bass with Greek salad was cooked brilliantly and reminded me of Mediterranean holidays; salty black olives and chunks of creamy feta and a great looking fish.

I challenge anyone to find a fun, informal dining experience that serves beautifully cooked whole fish for just a tenner. We are vowed regulars.

oh dear, Last night I went from being a regular and satisfied customer to a disatisfied and bemused one- why do resturants squander good will so easily - it does just not make any business sense, especially for a local restaurant. We decided to venture beyond the usually excellent fish & chips ordering crab fish cakes and red mullet - mistake, the crab-cakes had a rubber texture and seemed to either have been (badly)reheated in the microwave or left too long in the oven, but most unforgiveable of all - they lacked any taste, the salad garnish was just on the "turn" - but at least the chips were the usual high standard- my dinner partner had red mullet which was tiny with an overwhelming livery smell that made it impossible to eat -when we pointed this out the response was "but it was bought this morning at Billingsgate" - we persisted despite the plate being brought back to the table with the usual "chef says it's ok" - again we persisted - they offered an exchange and 5 mins later a replacement dish was thumped down on the table - the battered cod that replaced it was tiny, a child's portion - why treat us in this downright rude way? - if you offer a replacement then honour it - don't use it as a way to insult customers -as we are regulars and we know how good this place can be - we held our ground - (but it was beginning to seem like a battle) with both sides getting quite short but eventually to her credit the waitress apologised and charged us for a childs portion - come on Fish House, treat your customers with a little more grace - fish that is not quite right is one of the easiest things to detect - you don't have to be a chef to understand this - then again, you just never know who sits at your table, the customers themselves could be chefs or a range of people who do know about fish so patronising them is really unecessary l

I am very impressed with the Fish House. The venue itself has been well designed and is stylish, clean and welcoming. The service is always very friendly and the quality of the fish and chips is excellent. A superb newcomer to Victoria Park Village. What with the fantastic Empress next door and the Ginger Pig butchers opening over the road, the Village is now becoming an oasis in the culinary dessert of Hackney.

What a great addition to the area, clean place with friendly and competent staff who are interested in customers - I had the classic fish & chips, beautiful crisp chips and fish cooked just so well in a perfect batter, mushy peas with the right hint of mint - how fish and chips should be, served with a very good glass of house white - all in all a really good meal, well priced - the other items on the menu all look interesting and I will be back to try them - usually I only eat fish & chips a few times a year, this is bad for my waistline as I want to keep going back
