Matsu is a very good place for sushi and sashimi and one of the best restaurants in Crouch End. I have been many times, I have always found fresh fish and every time has been a delightful experience. Both the chef and the staff are nice and helpful. Prices are affordable. Definitely very good value for money.

this is the worst japanese i have ever eaten. £90 for 3 people, to be expected. there is apparently a japanese chef in the kitchen, but his/her skill set is no more than that of a fish and chip server. would not reccomend this to anybody. a true japanese culinary insult. we eat japanese all the time. nothing japanese about the place

I am reviewing this on the quality of its sashimi asi went in the restaurant and ordered it to take away! The atmosphere of the restaurant was poor i'm afraid, pretty much lifeless. My sashimi was fishy smelling and cut really poorly, huge thick chunks! Sorry to say but WOW Simply Japanese wins hands down...

I have a massive problem - I can't stop eating sushi. Whether it's a quick trip to Fuji Foods in Muswell Hill, a quick stop off at Kulu Kulu or a full on splurge at Asakusa I'm always there if anyone sounds remotely interested in stuffing their face with raw fish.

I was dubious at first - Matsu, roll your own suhshi ? Near Simply Japanese. Well even though I initially resisted the prospect of another good Sushi joint near me was too much to pass up.

As we walked in I though the restaurant was sparsely and rather uninspiredly done out but trips to the aforementioned Asakusa had thought me not to judge a book by its cover.

Al the other diners - it was half full - seemed to be eating the hot dishes. Mistake number one as if you go hot you miss the point. The hot food - I sampled one dish, teriyaki chicken, was ... well it was rubbish. On the strength of it I would have ripped the place to shreds and never come back.

So forget hot stuff - if you fancy a chicken skewer or dumpling have one they'll be ok nothing more.

The sushi however was excellent. The tuna was some of the best I have eaten and the hand rolls were top class.

I enjoyed the tuna sashimi so much that I ordered another two portions to share with my dining partner. To my surprise the chef came out and explained he had give me two different cuts (both sublime) and spoke to us for a few moments.

I am rating this for sushi only though and the great service by the chef.

General service was ok - they were a bit slow and suffering from opening blues but if you want nice fish and a top chef do give it a go.
