I can clearly see this restaurant is well-respected, but I have to put my head above the parapet as I simply didn't have a great time here!
We went for one of their set menus in order to see some variety without the hassle of choosing everything. Sadly, the portions were very much on the small side! Did I catch them on a bad day? It's a shame, since this doesn't make a great advert for a restaurant that is in a minority. It was tasty, though. But not quite enough.
Service was good, though. All the right boxes ticked in that department.
The decor is quite plain, I felt. There's nothing particularly outstanding about it. It's clean, does the job and there's a nice entrance, but the main body of the restaurant is quite standard.
And the damage? I'd say it was too much relative to the package delivered. We're not in central London here, so pull back a bit please!
Would I go back? Possibly. But only possibly.

I was very dissapointed with this restaurant, it was my 13th birthday and me and my family went out for dinner, we arrived there at 8.45pm and this was our first time there. We were given a table quickly but it was at the back even though their were empty (better) tables around. The service wasn't bad at first we ordered our starters and drinks quickly and recieved them shortly but we noticed how tiny the portions were compared to other places for such a high price and the drinks were just poured from cartons. After we had finished our starters it took ages for anyone to take our next order my dad even had to get the waiters attention because he was just cleaning tables at the other end and there were no other waiters around even though the place was practically empty. My brother and parents all got their food but i was still waiting for mine and after 20 minutes it never came my family had eaten all their food and we would've been ready to go by now if my food had come. A waiter popped by and said he had messed up the order and even the people who had come in after us had got their food first. The waiter offered to take the order again but my mum was very upset and angry and said no, another waitress came and apologised but no one had came to see us the whole evening to check how we were and my mum was very annoyed and asked for the bill, it came and was roughly £50 for barely any food. We left after a dissapointed evening. I wouldn't recommend this place if your looking for a great vegetarian place to go then go to rose vegetarian in kingsbury, much better food and a whole lot cheaper.

I cannot praise this place enough! I am a meat eater, but still LOVE to go to this restaurant. The buffet is varied, extensive in choice, fresh and well, lovely. The main menu is very authentic and I don't know of a restaurant in London which does indian food which is so close to what you get in India itself. I highly recommend this restaurant.

As a vegetarian, finding restaurants with a menu where I'm spoilt for choice is a rare pleasure. After visiting Rani, however I realised it was too good to be true. The prices were somewhat more than your average Tandoori, as such we expected a good meal. After being "encouraged" to go for the much promoted buffet, our waitress reluctantly accepted our order from the menu. I must admit the food arrived quickly and was well presented, however the quality was very disappointing indeed. The rice was overcooked and of almost a gloopy consistancy and both curries were bland, thin and obviously watered down. The poori literally dripping in oil just added to the 'food' we left behind; far more than came with us! Unfortunately there was a loud rowdy party on the other side of the restaurant which was of course, not the restaurant's fault. I'd like to describe the service as attentive, but after serving our meals, no member of staff came into our part of the restaurant for the remainder of our visit (so much for another round of drinks and desert!) Being sat where we were with the smell of cigarettes wafting over us from the door to smoker's corner they kept open put us off desert. Having to go to the counter to pay after being unable to summon a member of staff was pretty much a case of more of the same. A real shame, we hope if you venture here you have better service and moreso, a better meal!

This is a great place to go even if you love meat!
The buffet is fresh and extensive and the main menu is wonderful as well.
This is the closest to 'real' indian food you will find around London so please do give it a go!!

It sounds like this place has been going for years. Who knew a vegetarian Indian restaurant would survive in Finchley? Ok, it's not going to win any style awards and the (delicious) smell of curry does tend to follow you home on your clothes, but it's still a very decent local restaurant. The service is ultra polite too.
The buffet, along with various other discount deals, seems popular but if you're not into competitive eating then the a la carte is your best bet. It's worth noting that the food is authentically spiced so if you're used to bland creamy curries, you might want to order some raita and a lassi to cool things down.
The Rani thali is a nice way of tasting a few different dishes but our favourite is the masala dosa, which is easily the best I've had in North London. (There doesn't seem to be much South Indian food around here unfortunately!). The coconut chutney and sambhar are both really tasty, and Rani's coriander chutney is also worth ordering.
Give it a go - maybe not for a first date, but for a full-on feast.
