We love Chosan. If you want to eat 'real' Japanese food cooked by Japanese chef in a relaxing, friendly, small family-run restaurant, try Chosan.
Time Out guide said 'their Black Cod is just as good as Nobu's, but it's half the price'. We've never been to Nobu, but Chosan's Black Cod was delicious. We also love Saba Oshi Sushi (pressed sushi with marinated mackerel).
We have seen Japanese expats family eating at Chosan and it was lovely to see their smiling waitress fussing and cuddling their customer's baby while the couple ate in peace!

As a Japanese expert, I wouldn't go back to this restaurant. Sushi rice was terrible, and freshness of the fish was just passable. It's not worth for the price. I wonder how they could run business for 9 years.

I always feel this place should be better than it really is - looks like such a find - hidden location, eclectic decor, some Japanese diners - but its not. Food is average, drinks overpriced, service is poor (the owner lady looks almost unhappy to see you!) and your bill is always much higher than expected. My edamame was boiled to within an inch of its life, poor thing.

The sushi there was awful. It got a really funny test and the presentation was really dreadful. The sushi used to be nice there. I dont think i would go there again.

I took my boyfriend to Chosan for his birthday. I had high hopes for this small establishment on the Upper Richmond road and they were surpassed by a winning combination of excellent service, a lovely atmosphere and of course wonderful food! We had a range of dishes including sushi and noodles and everything was delicious. We will certainly be going back.

I absolutely adore sushi/sashimi and first discovered Japanese food to my delight 18 years ago at the Japan Centre in Brewer Street.
Sadly, after visiting this restaurant on Saturday evening I was disappointed for several reasons:
Although, the quality of the fish is good (not exceptional) the quality of the rice was poor and lacking the slightly sweet, sticky texture that we have come to expect from good Japanese Restaurants.
The miso soup we ordered, several variations on the menu was remimiscent of home-made vegetable soup with a few chunks of tofu thrown in. The green tea ice-cream was truly awful, like green tea flavoured walls ice-cream!
As well as being over-priced and the restaurant resembling a cluttered second-hand curiosity shop, it was hot and stuffy inside.
After paying our bill via credit card, we were not even acknowledged with a thank you or goodbye, maybe because we didn't leave a tip as this was included as a gratuity!
More importantly, there were no Japanese diners.
If you want truly exceptional Japanese cuisine (no frills) and where Japanese people actually go there to dine try: Sushi-Hiro (Ealing Common) and Japan Centre in Brewer Street.

The previous reviewer is simply wrong. Chosan is a proud chef who goes out of his way to ensure the best quality fish. This is not a glitzy restaurant but authentic and utterly charming. The fatty tuna is a pure food experience

If you want good Sushi, then definitely NOT a place to go - not fresh. For other dish - authentic and ok but very basic normal Japanese household food, nothing of sort to expect for special meal.
Therefore, considering the standard of food, amount of food (tiny in each dish), atmosphere (bit shabby, out of trend, not well ventilated) and service(basic), the price setting is absolutely extortionate.
How can they charge £13 for Yaki Udon? That is one of most down market food in Japan! Other dish, so tiny bits and pieces for high price.
If you paying same price, definitely recommend up market place in London where you can get much nicer authentic Japanese.
