This Is London

This Is London - 4.5/5

Friday, May 29, 2009 - At Stamford Bridge, MARCO is a collaborative effort between Mr Pierre White and Chelsea Football Club. The stylish edge to the restaurant is reflected in its sleek décor. With a red carpet and glittering entrance this isn’t a subtle attempt at glamour… What is most satisfying about MARCO is that you are in the hands of those that know what they are doing. The staff are passionate about food and will be happy to give you their recommendations. So even the most indecisive of diners will be led in the right direction.

Went here with a Groupon voucher (£35 for 2 people eating steak and chips + any pudding + a glass of wine each) as we live round the corner. Weird, footballers' wives style decor (unsurprisingly given the location, ownership and likely clientele) and service was adequate. Food was very good (10oz sirloin and caramelised apple pie) and house wine was fine.

The main gripe I have was a blatant attempt to increase margins by making people buy extra drinks. When we arrived, we were told that our table wasn't ready (when we arrived there were 3 or 4 ready tables for 2) and were told to go to the bar. This happened to everyone who walked in - really shameful and obvious process. Of course, when we sat down it was at one of the tables that was already prepared when we arrived. Shame as everything else (at the Groupon price) was good.

Marco was fantastic from start to finish.

The food was some of the best we have eaten in a long time and once we were inside we forgot essentially we were dining in a football ground.

The valet parking was a lovely touch and the restaurant was busy even for a Tuesday night.

Highly recommend

Went to Marco with two friends on a Tuesday night. We were one of only 4 tables, the rest of the restaurant was deserted.

On arrival we were seated and and straight away asked what drinks we would like, asked for a wine menu and then waited 20 minutes before being able to order a bottle. Then asked three times to see a food menu but in the end this didn't arrive until we'd been there for 45 minutes!

Overall i'd say the food was very good (although nothing amazing) but the service was awful. Staff were unfriendly and I don't think i'd go back.

Visited Marco recently for a birthday celebration. The decor is plush, though possible rather too dingy and the giant glittery gold pillar seems bizarrely out of place. The waiting staff were attentive, but for my taste, a little overbearing, perhaps I'm not used to having three waiters per table! My starter was foie gras with brioche, both were very nice, but sadly it was accompanied by a heavily alcohol infused jelly, which totally overpowered the delicate flavour of the foie gras. I had the belly pork main, which was lovely as long as the roasting juices lasted, after this it was rather dry and a little disappointing. My dessert was the lemon tarte, which was just right; tart without making your eyes bleed and sweet without inducing instant diabetes. All in all a pleasant evening was had by all, though everyone noted the distinct lack of customers, even on a pleasant Saturday evening.

Would I return, possibly, only if someone else was paying!

We went to a wine-tasting evening on 29 January, held by Livio the manager. It was a three-course set dinner with a set of matching wines. The evening started off with prosecco and a short presentation of the wines by Livio, followed by a starter of pheasant terrine, main course of venison and a dessert of lemon tart.

The food was fantastic, and the wines matched perfectly. The staff, especially Livio is extremely helpful and welcoming. Given the standard of the food and quantity of wine, it was very good value for money.

Highly recommended!

A Girl Has To Eat

A Girl Has To Eat

Monday, February 15, 2010 - With the exception of the foie gras terrine (not bad, but not amazing) and a couple of overcooked sides in the roast chicken dish, the food on the whole was excellent, well executed and beautifully presented. I found the pricing reasonably fair for the calibre of cooking that we had. And the fact that we had this meal on a 50% off special offer made it even better value...The only real drawback I can think of is the setting. It's nicely done, but it's just a touch too sombre to really engage with the diner.
