Satay House Malaysian Restaurant

The atmosphere was a bit for the wags. And of course the waiters/waitresses were polite (a lot better than Mawar). I ordered something that's quite rare and 100% unable to be prepared at home. The bergedil! Yeah, suddenly I panicked and asked for Nasi Goreng Kampung for the Main Course. I felt I had made a wrong choice. Well, I thought wrong. The bergedils were quite huge. And the portion for the nasi goreng was large as well, thus I had to cancel my intention on ordering their specialty menu; satays. I took a bite on the bergedil and suddenly I had a rush of excitement gushing into my brain. The bergedil was fantastic! (seriously, I am not joking or being sarcastic here). And then, the nasi goreng. Even better! Like a food critic, I rambled on the heavenly made food and couldn't stop praising them. I shouted 'Yes' as I realise I can go back home as a full and happy man. A very, very happy man.

As a Singaporean I'm particular about Malay food and I must say, I really enjoyed Satay House. The murtabak was good, more meat than you'd normally get back home but if you're carnivorous who cares! Soto Ayam not as good as oriental city and a little bland. The lontong was pretty good, a little sweet and not quite authentic but certainly close. Gula melaka genuinely one of the best I've had - certainly better than my mothers!

The first time my wife and I passes this restaurant, we could not get a table as it was fully booked. I tried again with a friend of mine on a Thurs night and I can understand what all the fuss is about. The dishes that we had were really tasty. The egg fried rice was the best I have had in the UK. The lamb curry really special and even the chicken in coconut ( when i dont like coconut) was nice. Dinner for 2 with beers was £36. My new favourite malaysian restaurant. (and just happens to be 2 mins from our flat!

The food is a bit pricey. Its surprising that with so much demand for oriental food in london, there are still not that many Malay restaurants and the few that are there tend to be rather pricey.

I have been dining at Satay House for 13 years and must say that the standard of food served in the restaurant has declined in the last year. If one doesn't mind having hydrolyzed chicken (even if it is safe, the texture of the chicken is rubbery) and watery peanut sauce, then it is still a good Malaysian restaurant in London. However, for the prices that you pay for dishes, you'd expect them to use quality ingredients. Service is friendly.

I think the review by Khir Mohd Toyo (who is a state minister in Malaysia)is unfair to Satay House. I've been there and will going there again. I have entertained my Caucasian friends, wh have generally found it to be exciting.
As for being better to cook at home, Khir Toyo needs to understand London life whihc is hectic and there are no "indonesian" maids to help. So cooking is a chore and time consuming. Going to Satay House or Naha or Holiday VIlla is a good option. Naturally nothin replaces home cooking but we live in real world not in gilded palaces.

My reaction to this restaurant is one of, well, ambivalence! Admittedly Satay House is the closest one can get to Malaysian fine-dining, if there is such a concept, in London. And, if based on this concept- then the portions served at Satay House are generally reasonable. However, from the point of view of someone who has been to the other six Malaysian-Indonesian non-Chinese restaurants in London - the servings are a tad small. Satay House still, however exceed my expectations where taste and ambience is concerned. It is a place I would bring my friends, who are not on a shoe string budget.
