I used to work two minutes away from the original Taro on Brewer St and I can tell you that this place really rocks!
The food is really nice and very good value for money. For first timers try the Chicken Teriyaki Don - definatly their best dish!
Ok this place isn't where you would take your girl friend on a luxury anniversary meal. It is the place you can go with a bunch of friends or your girlfriend for a great quick meal!
In concluesion this place is an alturnative to Waga's that also does sushi! I always look forward to going there!

Another girly night out, my girlfriends finally convinced me to try Japanese once and for all. All the myths about Japanese food being raw, smelly and not big in qualities soon disappeared! I had a vegetarian soup for starters. It was fresh and light. For mains, Chicken Teriyaki with Rice and Bean Sprouts which was served in a funky clay square shaped bowl. It was delicious and filling. We also ordered some some sushi like california rolls, tuna and cucumber rolls. Ideal! We had a reservation, were seated immediately and served at the speed of light! For the 3 of us the bill came to around £33 in total. We only ordered soft drinks and no alcohol along with the meal. Once we were done, they were quite keen on us leaving quickly as there was a long que starting to build up. I love Japanese food now, this is the perfect place to take *virgins*. I am totally hooked!! Its good value for money but I would recommend, reserving a table from beforehand!

Taro is a Japanese-style restaurant but is staffed mainly by cheaply-paid Korean students, hence the "creative" service! The food is passable - the miso soup is very good, the sushi is very good value for money, but the meat is much less palatable. I agree with many reviewers here that the chicken is gritty, fatty and tasteless. The ramen is also straight out of a packet with a handful of chopped veg! To be honest, if you want a cheap eat Misato is better. For the real thing Ten Ten Tei or Sakura are sreets ahead.

I'm half Japanese and seriously this restaurant doesn't even deserve reviewing. By all means if you have had a nice dining experience, feel free to eat there but isn't it a bit strange that so many people have had a teanrrible time at this restaurant? I have made the mistake of eating there twice and let me tell you both times were distastorous. The staff are NOT Japanese, the food is NOT Japanese-style and the service is ATROCIOUS. My mum has often complained with the food only to have a waiter rudely argue back. I, myself, found the sushi to be average and bearable but the noodles? Don't even bother I am telling you. And no, I'm not an upper-class snob. Taro is just a snob of a restaurant what with the staff's rude manners and terrible service.

I only had the sushi and it was the best value I've ever eaten in London. The fish was superb. If you're worried about the noddles given reviews below, avoid them and it is still worth the visit.

I agree with the previous reviewer - since one of my friends introduced me to Taro, I've taken several of my friends there, and we have always enjoyed it immensely. The food is delicious and varied, and I have never had a problem with the service. The sushi is extremely good value, and the Udon is sublime! I'd choose Taro over Wagamama any day.

Forget the rest of these reviews. Myself and a friend frequent this restaurant on a regular basis. The food is of the highest quality and the best you will find outside of Japan. The other bonus is the price, just £5 for a dish of rice and terriyaki chicken. The staff always welcome you with a 'Konnichiwa' and are always polite. I think upper class snobs may find it a bit canteen hence the off reviews.

This is the worst restaurant I have ever been to.
I ordered a chicken noodle dish and instead got pork. When I complained the waiter tried to convince me that the meat was in fact chicken by grabbing bits of it into his hands and taking it apart.
When, after he put the meat pieces back on my plate, I said I was no longer interested in whether it was chicken or pork and would not eat the meal, he called the owner who then repeated the process of meat picking all over again.
I have never been treated so poorly by restaurant staff and was just completely shocked by their behaviour. To sum it up it was the worst experience at a restaurant I have ever had.

Our friends visiting from out of town wanted Japanese food and we ended up at Taro since the Japanese restaurant we frequent across the street (Ten Ten Tei)was shut.
The service was horrible and the food nothing to write home about. We felt ignored and it took ages for us to get our bill. I also did not appreciate the waitress dumping empty dishes into my bowl of soup right in front of me while clearing the table just so she could save a few trips!
If you are looking for good Japanese food, go somewhere else!

This restaurant is very basic but the food is cheap and tasty and the atmosphere is good, with a lot of japanese people dining here everytime i visit. The service is average, nothing special but not too bad either and although the decor isn't that interesting, it keeps a sense of simplicity which means you can concentrate on the food.
i would recomened this to anyone who wants to try some japanese food or maybe likes it in general but maybe not for the coinessuers!
