Matthew Norman - 8/10

Wednesday, July 14, 2010 - The chicken, a delicately marinated bird flattened and barbecued on the chargrill at the back, was glorious, all juicy and crispy and savoury, and okra with lamb cubes (bamia billammi) a cinnamony delight. If kibbieh shamieh - pastry diamonds stuffed with minced lamb, cracked wheat and pine nuts - was underseasoned, we;d gorged so greedily on the starters that we wouldn't have finished it anyway.

I'm so surprised to read the reviews that complain about how bad the waiters are! I've been there on several occasions and have always had the best service - even being brought complimentary tea and cakes. I've taken friends and family there, who have all been back again, and enjoyed it immensely.

The prices are very reasonable and the portions always generous. It is a favourite of mine and I didn't want anyone reading the reviews to be put off and miss out on it.

Went to this restaraunt last night and was impressed by the food and decor. What I was less impressed by was the service, which I found pretty appaling. We were told to sit in the corner as apparently that was the only space available, although I could clearly see that this was not the case. It was definately not the best spot...it was freezing cold and also the table was beneath the plasma tv which made us very uncomfortable, with all eyes in our direction. We were told that the heating would be switched on, but that never happened. The bread was served cold. I ordered a dessert but never got it, but was billed for it. The staff in general seemed nice, however we were continuously served by this one waiter who was so rude and grumpy, that you had to wonder why he was torturing himself by working there as he was clearly unhappy and so rude to the customers. A couple walked in and requested to sit at the back. They were rudely told by THAT waiter that there was no other tables available. They were not impressed but he didn't care and insisted that they were free to go elsewhere..which they did. If it were not for the fact that I had travelled all the way from Reading to eat there then surely I would have left. In my opinion some of the staff need to be re-trained or replaced as they are giving the restaraunt a bad reputation. The food by the way was delicious.

This may not be the absolute best mezze in London, but it is certainly very good, the standards are well executed, it has a few points of difference from the norm and it is incredible value for money. We over ordered including dessert we just didn't need and didn't top £15 a head.

No alcohol is allowed, but despite that the Ayran and juices are much cheaper than at similar establishments. I'm not from the middle east, and service was fine for us. Will definitely be back to try some of the interesting sounding main dishes, if I can resist gorging on the mezze.

Just been to Abu Zaad yesterday, again. To make it short: Food is very good - very tasty dishes and nicely decorated. Prices are very good value for money - freshly squeezed juices for as little as 1.95 Pounds. Average meal price is around 6-8 Pounds (incl. Side dish!!).

Staff was marvelous yesterday - I dropped a fork and the waiter came straight away with a new clean fork and knife, WITHOUT BEING ASKED!! So despite some service complaints in some of the other reviews - the service was great for us. (Group of 7 all international).

Definitely a nice dinner.
