O Cantinho de Portugal

Love this place, love this place, love this place. I used to live just around the corner, but ended up there again the other evening.
Authentic Portugese food served by nice people, in a place that feels like a little slice of Lisbon (Portugese footy on the telly, natch). It's very reasonably priced, they have proper imported Sagres beer, and it's always heaving with portugese people. The rump steaks are lovely, the pork and mussel stew is to die for, and their gambas piri piri has me coming back as often as I can.

Absolutely wonderful! Brilliant service, everything in order. Friendly waiters, lovely atmosphere, and the food absolutely marvellous!!!! Can´t say anything against this place! Love it! And the most important, it is full of Portuguese people (as a Spanish, that says a lot, as I hardly see any Spanish restaurants with Spanish people, and I think I know why!).

The restaurant itself is not amazing and the waiters could do a better effort but both the food and price are excellent. I'm Portuguese and I'm always fearful of eating in Portuguese restaurants abroad, most times the ingredients quality isn't the same you get in Portugal. Cantinho de Portugal may not be the best Portuguese restaurant ever but the food quality is the usual you get in Portugal. Perfect for any Portuguese or someone trying to taste the original flavours from Portugal.

I grew up in Portugal and this is a family favourite - somewhere we always try to go on special occasions. The location doesn't matter a jot, the atmosphere could not be less pretentious and more authentic and friendly, and the food is fabulous - always deliciously tasty, which is the key feature of Portuguese. The negative reviewers have missed the point.

In short, the food was quite disappointing and overpriced for the area.
On arrival, I really liked the casual atmosphere of the place and with its bar and coffee machine behind the snack counter and football blaring out of the TV – it really had a continental feel. Staff were welcoming and polite and swiftly brought us a fresh basket of bread and some tasty olives. My glass of house red was very pleasant and my partner was perfectly happy with his bottle of Sagres. Things were going well. We felt pleased about this ‘new find’ and based on the many great reviews of this restaurant were looking forward to our main course. Sadly, these really let the place down. My cod with potatoes and cream was nothing more than a hot fishy potato salad with very little fish. It would have been fine as a little side dish for something else, but certainly not worth £12. My partner’s steak in sauce with chips was also nothing special at all. When we got the bill we noticed they had also charged us for bread and olives which we wouldn’t have minded if the food had been good.
I really wanted to like this restaurant, but I’m afraid I won’t be returning. It wasn’t a patch on any of the food I had while on holiday in Portugal – sorry Cantinho! If you live in the vicinity, I imagine O Cantinho would be a good place to drop in for an espresso and cake or a drink or two, but I’m afraid I can’t really recommend it for anything else.

We went to this restaurant last saturday, whilst our son went to the Brixton Academy, very handy by the way 200 yards away. Must confess first impression from outside I wasnt to keen, but once inside wow what a lovely friendly atmosphere. Not a massive menu, a lot of fish based dishes which suited. All ordered and presented in good order and in good time even though they were very busy. Due to a loss in translation on our part , the missus' dish wasnt what she thought it would be and wasnt keen on what she got, without a fuss the patron offered a change of dish with no extra charge. Grilled Bass turned up fantastic!!!!! 3 of us - starter, main, and desert all round 1 bottle of wine and 6 soft drinks £70. Cant recommend enough will be going back.

I think it's great, coming in is like been in Portugal not only for the food, which I found excellent, but also for the enviroment. Moreover, I usually go with portuguese friends and they agree in the quality of the food. One of my favourites restaurants in London.

I agree with your comments, the positive ones are a complete suprise. The location of this place is not very attractive, and the internals are just the same. The food was nothing special to put it mildly, even though it was simple in ingrediants they did not excel in delivery. Would not go back even if it was free.

I am astonished that of all the reviews i have read on this place- they are all good. This place is terrible! First time it was average. But with bad service. Second time even worse-
I had a steak. How hard is steak and chips to cook? It's not. And yet i was still served tough, sinuey steak and burnt chips. I went with 25 other people at a xmas dinner, and yeah, maybe they messed up because it was indeed xmas, but frankly thats no excuse, if anything they should have upped their game, what with 25 or so eligible future patrons in their midst.. Next xmas i shall be going to mcdonalds.
This is a genuine review, but due to its negativity i presume it wont be uploaded. Sadly this will mean more people won't stop and think before entering.
