We went to this restaurant last Saturday afternoon around 5.30pm before visiting Sadlers Wells. I fancied something plain, so ordered their 3-egg omelette. Imagine my surprise when they told me that the kitchen was too small, the restaurant too busy and that it would take too long to prepare one! A bit flummoxed, I chose something else but pointed out to the waiting staff that the excuse was ridiculous (they agreed). In retrosepct we should have left there and then instead of re-ordering.
As I sat and waited for the food I didn't really want I noticed that (a) the restaurant was about one-third full and (b) the kitchen, although small, was not particularly busy. By the time my food did arrive (during the wait I could have gone to the kitchen myself and prepared an omelette) I was too angry to enjoy it. The crumbled goat’s cheese, toasted pine nuts, rocket and asian pear salad was 99 percent rocket and one percent everything else and the penne arrabiata was one of the worst I have tasted. We left as soon as we could and had coffee and dessert in another cafe up the road. Needless to say we will eat somewhere else in future but I would like to prevent this happening to someone else. If the chefs at Upper Street don't want to prepare an omelette the item should either be taken off the menu or diners should be told on presentation of the menu that the omelette is unavailable, instead of being fobbed off with an obvious lie.
