what the critics say

This Is London

David Sexton - 3/5

Thursday, April 08, 2010 - The new chef, 25-year-old Maxime Le Van, used to be head chef at Club Gascon...Sea bream was a big, well-cooked fillet, salty and buttery, accompanied by excellent gratinated clams and some broccoli florets and confit cherry tomatoes, oozing into a coulis. Salmon with a pistachio crust was an oddity, the dish tasting peculiarly sweet cloying. The constant quest for high impact evident in the cooking here seems sometimes to go too far - although a Pear Belle Helene was simple and classic.

Visited the restaurant on bank holiday monday 02/-5/11 with some friends for the first time and found that the food was really mediocre. the devon crab ceviche was mainly avocado, the rib-eye steak was mainly fatty. the service was patchy to say the least. when the waiter cleared the table and took our starter cutlery, i said, you took my knife, he looked at the soiled knifes and asked which one was yours? he was at the verge of handing me back a dirty knife - but then thought otherwise and gave me a new knife for my main course. after this incident it was hard to get his attention for anything other than the bill which came with suprising speed!

overall i would never take friends to 'paradise' or entertain business clients, the service is too bad and the food not good enough to warrant the money spent.

This a great friendly venue for some good honest, but stylish dining, in the tradition of the english gastropub. The atmosphere is romantic but also happening which makes you feel at ease to just let loose and enjoy! I love the beautiful decor but even more the beautiful food!!! Fabulous!

Whilst the food was amazing the service wasn't very good. Had to continuously call the waiter to poor more wine and water - little bit disappointing especially as we entertained clients.....and did mention that upon reserving the table.

I love this place, have been for dinner a few times now and it is always a step above a normal pub dining experience. The dining room feels like a dining room should, away from the busy bar and is quite decadent in a quirky way. The food was excellent, I had a pork and chicken terrine to start and shared a chateaubriand with my partner, simply excellent, the beef in particular was cooked to perfection. We shared a great bottle of Frog's Leap cabernet sauvignon followed by an Alion Ribero del Duero - both recommended by the waiter and they were well matched to our meals. Overall, a great night out - the espresso martinis to finish were very tasty but probably not necessary!

Had a fab roast on Sunday with a group of friends, some visiting from overseas. The service was fantastic, there were two lovely girls in particular who looked after us. One explained to the German guys on my table why rhubarb is such a big deal in England...she explained the rhubarb triangle etc so that was enlightening!

The sticky toffee pudding was delish, and most of us went for the lamb roast, or chicken & all plates were polished! One of my friends is a vegan & he was really happy with the squash risotto that was recommended to him. The dessert menu was so tempting - I seriously wanted to order everything!

Went to Paradise with some friends for a celebratory meal and I was pleasantly surprised. The food was great and the service was excellent. From the moment we entered the establishment the staff was pleasant and attentive. They are knowledgeable about their menu and actually quite friendly. For my main, I shared the cote de boeuf with a friend and it was delightful…more then enough food for two. The wine list was extensive and included a wide range of prices. It was all around a fantastic experience.

If you are out for a good night, I would suggest the expresso martini as an after dinner cocktail.

Definitely worth a visit!

Underwhelming at best. The quality of the food was mediocre, which, against lofty expectations from two previous visits in 2010 when it was good, was a disappointment. (I'm not sure what the other reviewers here ate, but I find it hard to believe we're talking about the same place.) Given the price, £100+ for two including apéritif and wine, one should expect a very decent dining experience. The steak (£22) was a thin and slightly piece of meat, not a good cut of fillet one might reasonably expect; the fish stew (£15) was edible but bland, overcooked and devoid of character; and the crème brûlée was not bad - but the hard caramel was too think. On the plus side, the starters - scallop ceviche and artichoke soup - were good, the service was friendly and the décor, as always at Paradise, was special. But food is a restaurant's raison d'être. Perhaps the management of Paradise decided to cut costs and avoid hiring a sufficiently skilled chef - surely a false economy for a place that charges not inconsiderable prices? It is difficult to make a case for recommending Paradise to anyone for whom dining is one of life's great pleasures. Avoid - and stick to the bar.

I went with my boyfriend for my birthday. We both had the Sunday roast, he had beef and I had lamb. They came on massive plates. Have to say that it was the most delicious roast dinner we've ever had in our lives!!! The meat was so tender. There was lots of vegetables, usually I run out of vegetables, but there was the right amount. We were both so full afterwards and feeling so good!

We were celebrating our 30th Wedding anniversary and had a meal last week at Paradise. I was really great. The atmosphere was good, the staff were friendly and helpful and the food was amazing. All in all a great experience. Well done.

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

Monday, January 24, 2011 - To start, I opted for a fowl terrine, consisting of nuggets of chicken, duck and pheasant. I was surprised at being able to distinguish each individual bird, and with a really rather nice and tart cranberry relish, I managed to polish the lot off with minor assistance. In exchange, I snaffled tasters of scallops and soup, all excellently executed...Desserts were a complete dud note, so the less said about them the better, but it certainly didn't put a dampener on the evening. With a name like Paradise, it certainly has a lot to live up to, but thankfully it could mostly justify those claims with a solid display from the kitchen.
