We had the hard task of booking a good resteraunt for our mum who is heavily in the know when it comes to good dining .we booked a table for 12 people at Trattoria la ruga on a saturday evening .All around this has to be the best italian resteraunt we have been to .unlike many places La ruga's service was amazing .We were taken through the menu perfectly by the very kind waiter. The food was 100 % as amazing as it sounded when explained to us before ordering. The waitresses helped with the children and taught one of the young ones how to peel prawns .I would recomend this place to anyone who appreciates quality traditional dining .Thanks to Trattoria la ruga for a great experience

After the third time visiting this restaurant, i really felt it was time to leave a review. This is what we should hope for when wishing for a quality local restaurant. All elements score a positive apart from the price, which could easily get away from you. Nevertheless, for rustic and full flavoured Italian food it really hits the spot.
The menu changes daily and there's plenty of choice, unless you're a vegetarian, where you would have struggled last night. The staff are brilliant - friendly, chatty, knowledgable about the food - if you wanted a vege option I'm sure they would have sorted it out. Highlights last night were the mains - stuffed octopus stew with an amazing deep and flavourful red win sauce; rabbit in a white wine sauce, again in a stew, but so tasty you wanted to keep coming back.
I'll keep coming back.

This place is just stunning. We've been going here for over two years and never had a bad experience. It's such a friendly place, Ricado and Salvo will treat you as friends and entertain you through the night whilst Nicky will prepare you some of the most stunning homemade food you have ever had. I have never had to wait long for a meal, I can only imagine the people that have complained are used to wanting food 20 seconds after ordering and not enjoying the company of your fellow diners and the atmosphere of this lovely restaurant.
It's a local for us, but i'd recommend jumping on the Victoria line for an evening here, it's only a short walk from Walthamstow Central.
It's not cheap, but the service and quality of food is worth every penny. Recently they have introduced pasta dishes Mon-Thurs which are very reasonably priced.

You can't fail to leave this place happier and more satisfied with life. This is a seriously good local restaurant. My only beef is it costs a few quid so I cant go as much as I'd like. But I've been going for years and will go for as long as it's there.

I went to Trattoria La Ruga on Saturday with six friends. Suffice to say I wonder whether the rest of the reviewers went to the same restaurant. The restaurant was fairly busy, but we still had to wait over half an hour before we were offered drinks. Our starters were okay, but very pricey (average price was £7). We then had to wait over an hour before our mains arrived, my medium steak arrived well done, my friends' 'pink in the middle tuna' was as dry as the Sahara Desert. The pheasant looked like roadkill and unfortunately tasted similar.
The only plus was the dessert, my chocolate tart was rich and not too sweet.
We only had 1 bottle of wine, but the bill still came to £35 each - a price I would pay in the West End for more superior food.

Let me be as clear as possible; if you eat at any other restaurant you are insane! Let Ricardo and his staff take you in their arms and lead you through Nicky's wonderful menu and you will not go wrong. Seriously, this stunning Tratt' is difficult to beat; the food is outstanding and the service is attentive and highly personal. Trust me, you will feel like your best friend has invited you to dinner; book a table now - only leave some tiramisu for me! Ciao bella.

I agree with all the above, but like the other reviewer below, I must say the wine is very overpriced. At £5 for a small glass of very average house wine, it makes their weekend offer of £12.50 for two courses seem daft.
It has stopped quite a lot of people I know from taking up the offer
Marco Pierre White's Yew Tree Inn only charge £4 for their very decent house wine!

La Ruga is a delight - the food is always fresh and delicious, and I love the cosy atmosphere. A perfect local restaurant.

I'll answer my own question, no it hasn't closed, they were giving the place a lick of paint.
My girlfriend and I went there on Tuesday, service as always was impeccable, wine good but the list is still a touch short.
Starters of Pate and Gnocchi were really tasty, the white wine, cream and Garlic sauae on the Gnocchi was the highlight of the whole meal.
The mains were well presented but not amazingly tasty, Guinea Fowl was good but the Sea Bream a bit dissapointing, plenty of fish but the sauce wasn't a flavoursome as the other things we've had there in the past, that said I ate it all!!! The veg was cooked to perfection, add the potato that came with it resutled in us both being too stuffed to squeeze in a desert.
The changing seasonal menu is good, 3 fish and 5 meat options in the summer but I think that the Spring menu is best, hope they put Lamb Shank and the ButterFish options on the menu again, the Lamb is the best I've ever tasted.
Certainly one of the top two places in the culinary desert that is E17, go there.

Has this place permanently closed down or is it closed for a re-fit? I walked past on Saturday night and workmen were blacking out the windows, shame if it is as this place was great!
