nick harmanOkay it’s really a takeaway/delivery kind of place but it does have seats so let’s call it a restaurant for the sake of argument. It’s not a certain large pizza chain, and it’s not that lot that sponsor The Simpsons either, but somewhere in between. Already a hit in its native New Zealand, it’s brought its fresh, breezy no-problems style to Fulham and the founder of the original chain is the man behind the counter. He could afford to retire at his enviable young age, but he loves the challenge.

Hell Pizza in NZ made a lot of its name on clever, quirky advertising that reached out to Generation X (or are we in Y now?) plus pizzas that are genuinely different and some NZ touches you wont find at the big, characterless, chains. How many pizza takeaways offer you a choice of wines selected by a proper wine writer who’s been in to eat the pizzas and make the selections? Being able to pick up a pizza and a decent bottle of wine at the same time, or have delivered, is a grown up way to eat pizza. The owner says the odd caller even asks for a carton of milk too, and if they aren’t too busy they sometimes try to oblige. How nice.

Some of the toppings are great, some make me a bit wary – camembert? But the bases aren’t too thick and all the toppings are generous. I crammed my way through a load of fun nibbles like lemon pepper wedges, kumara (sweet potato) chips and corn nuggets all with various dips. The smaller pizza options mean you can get quite a selection and all in all it’s a good feast. Nice NZ beer available too.

The menu is amazing, totally different than anything I've ever seen. There is so much to choose from and its very reasonably priced too.

I went for the Serpent which had smoked salmon and avocado on it, now I would never of thought of putting these two on a pizza but OMG it was amazing!

Theres also some great sides to choose from. I had the corn nuggets which were yummy and the Kumara chips made a nice change from french fries.

Me and my pals loved the quirky decor and will definitely go back. We'd definitley recommend it to anyone!

A kiwi friend of mine recommended Hell to me and I am forever in debt to him now!

The friendly guy serving us (probably the owner?) was able to talk us through the menu and recommend a selection of pizzas and some interesting sides too. It's great to finally have a local pizza place who uses quality toppings - and in generous amounts too! Some of the combinations seem weird - but after some convincing we dabbled and somehow they worked wonderfully! They have a good selection of NZ beers to try too.

We were in quite a large group but they coped easily and our food was served quickly.

This is a nice relaxed & casual restaurant that also does takeaway and delivery.
