Having been travelling in Europe and Asia for the past two years I recently returned to my old haunt the “Stock Pot”.I visited on a few occasions in late November and during December and was dismayed to find that the manager who I had previously regarded as mildly eccentric was now quite irritating.

On my first visit he burst forth from the door to the upper parts of the building shrieking “fabuloso” and “my name is Bond,James Bond”.

Food prices appeared to continue to be reasonable so I soldiered on. I have however found that the quality of the food is such that were it served in a works canteen there would be a strike! My old favourite fish and chips is virtually inedible – indeed another customer on seeing my order wished me luck with my meal. I needed it as the batter was so tough that a steak knife should have been offered to break through the outer casing.

The same was true of the “ox liver” – so tough as to be inedible and the lamb cutlets were no better.

On the plus side the desserts are still as good as ever and the service better than ever- how do those girls put up with the “management”?
