The Coconut Lagoon

We booked this restaurant for a special occassion, being fans of indian cuisine we were all looking forward to indian with a twist. We were quite dissappointed, the food was very bland, the wine list poor and the poor waiters were quite unsure of the menu. It looked as though they had tried too hard to be innovative and as a result the food did not really taste like it should in a good indian restaurant.

We went to the Coconut Lagoon in Stratford-upon-Avon (but sounds like our experience might be relevant the London branch as well). The problem with this restaurant (as with many Indian/Asian restaurants in the UK) is that for some reason they don't think Brits can handle authentic flavours. I'm not talking about "heat" or "spiciness" - the dishes have enough of that. It's the richness of flavour in the meat dishes which is sadly lacking. As a result, several of our dishes tasted very similar, and the meat clearly hadn't been cooked in the sauce for very long (if at all) to soak up the flavour. When will Coconut Lagoon, and many others, learn that Brits are not afraid of flavour - and would appreciate it if it were served to them! Please don't sacrifice flavour to "please" our British palates - we're grown up now!

Quite impressed overall with this restaurant, though I think their standard prices are a bit steep. I went there with a few friends on a 50% off deal - at these prices, Coconut Lagoon represents excellent value for money. The interior is very pleasant and the service polite and attentive. They could do with having more vegetarian items on the menu, however the items I chose (Paneer Roti and Malabar Omelette) were very good, and the portion sizes are quite large too.
It's just a shame that they were not able to serve Appam (a delicious indian bread made with coconut milk) that evening - but the paratha we had instead were very good too.

There are some great deals to encourage you to try this place but nothing impressed me so much that I would be back I'm afraid. service was attentive and the decor was bright and very different for an Indian restaurant. Though they offer an interesting range very different to anything I had tried before the quality of the meat was not good and presentation was pretty lacking. It was may sound petty but when something looks appetising and comes well set out it creates a much better impression. A fun place to go but not great value for money at full price and not somewhere to take anyone to if you're trying to impress.

OK, so Sunday night was neevr going to be the busiest time but the lack of people made for a real lack of ambience despite some nice Indian music. Great value on a 50% off cocktails and food offer and the portions were huge - no "find the meat" games here. However, although the food was fairly decent southern Indian cooking, it wasn't inspiring enough to pay about £13 per main for, even though this includes your rice and a few vegeatble bits of salad. Service was attentive but unintrusive and price (£40 for 5 cocktails, 3 starters, 3 mains and some papads) was amazing but not special enough to make areturn visit I suspect.
