Georgetown Restaurant

This is one of the worst restaurants I have ever eaten in. The food was disgusting. My partner ordered beef rendang for his main which so closely resembled dog food in appearance and totally lacked any flavour. It was just mush. It was also exactly the same as my starter but presented differently. Exactly the same. I ordered a fish curry, which was 2 dice sized pieces of dried fish in watered down coconut milk, presented in half of a scooped out pineapple. It was just hilarious, 2 pieces of dried fish, thanks! I can honestly say this is the worst food I have ever eaten. I think the only reason they can stay open is through passing tourist trade, I don't know why anyone would ever go back.

I have never written a review online before but after eating at the Georgetown in Stratford Upon Avon I had to come and see what other people thought. of the Georgetown Restaurant. I dread to think where those reviewers who have praised the place usually eat!

Quite simply the worst meal I have eaten in years. I am not Malaysian but have eaten in a couple in the past. As the reviewers say below, totally unauthentic. It was so obvious the Restaurant is a chain and food is pre-prepared and deep fried/microwaved.

As it is so clearly a chain I suspect the London based place is the same.

Dreadful!

I have to agree with the reviews I have just read; have just been there for our work Christmas meal and did not enjoy the experience one bit.

The place was CRAMMED with tables- people literally were sitting in each others laps- it was an absolute production line. This did not add to the inital ambience.

The portions of food were very small, and in varying stages of warmth. Two of our party had the beef medallions, and I share the other reviewer's comments about these- tough as boots and black as the night were comments that were made. I had the plaice, which was actually quite pleasant- but the waiters breathing down our necks every two minutes (no exagerration) was not pleasant. Every sip of wine was accompanied by a bottle being picked up by the waiter. I think this is actually quite rude and overbearing.

They could not wait to have us out of there, and were actually trying to take plates off us while we were eating. I appreciate it's party season and they want "bums on seats", but that attitude is appalling.

I certainly won't be going there again.

I dined last Saturday with a few friends at the Georgetown and enjoyed their Georgetown Experience which was great value. The Singapore Sling was reminicent of the time I spent at Raffles Hotel in Singapore some years ago and the four course meal was excellent. I felt the portions could have been a larger but no complaints about the quality though. The Rendang Daging deserves mention and was excellent as was the Mysore Aadu. Will definitely return.

Where better to have a reunion of 5 ex IT staff who worked in London Bridge, than the Georgetown Malaysian restaurant next to London Bridge station. Moreover the restaurant had an half price offer for the a la carte menu in January.

The restaurant is large and airy, and you could easily imagine yourself in the humidity of Singapore.

The bar area was very tight for the 5 of us, but it at least allowed the smokers amongst us enjoy a pre- and post-lunch smoke. None of us had a Singaporean sling, but as an Archers and Lemonade cost £5, perhaps it was better we didn't.

The food was a mixed bag. Certainly the King Prawns in curry with flat bread was delicious as a starter - if quite spicy and messy to eat -. You really have to eat them with your hands. For the mains my fish selection from the Malaysian menu (there is a Tamil Indian and Mandarin Chinese menu too) was excellent. However, my colleagues found the Satay chicken tasteless, and the claypot containing vegetables, fish and meat in soup was a huge disappointment.

The waiters were very attentive, in fact too attentive as they insisted on filling your glass to the brim with wine at every opportunity - so obviously a ploy to increase our consumption of wine.

When we had booked lunch, we were told the a la carte menu was half price. Of course the waiters tried to charge us the full price!

With the half price a la carte menu, wine, and pre-lunch drinks and coffee, and service the bill came to £31 per head. That was good value. But I think with the full price menu, you would be looking at about £55-£60 per head.

I think the concept is good, but I just don't think the food is of a high enough standard to warrant the prices they charge.

My husband and I stay at the London Bridge Hotel next door to this restaurant on numerous occasions and have never tried the Georgetown. On this occasion it was a Sunday evening and there was not much else open in the area. To say we were dissapointed would be an understatement. Do not go to this restaurant if you are hungry or have a large appetite. The portions are very very small and we did not think it was at all authentic. We chose from the Malay and Chinese menus.The tim sue was the worst we have ever tasted. It was like sausage meat wrapped in pulpy soggy dough. The rest of the meal was equally tastless. They were not busy and the kitchen staff were wandering in and out of the bar area and proceeded to have chats with each other in a very loud manner. They had no concern for the three tables that were dining and it was just like being in a noisy take away. We had four courses each and still felt hungry when we left and the bill was not cheap. We went back next door to the hotel and proceeded to order room service. So all in all it was a really expensive meal

Great decor, good service. The food is NOT authentic at all. Most of my family is from Malaysia and I was very disappointed with the beef rendang, which turned out more like some odd curry. Not unpleasant, just not right. A Singaporean man on the table next to me rightly sent his Hainanese chicken rice back. It was nothing of the sort, as another reviewer here remarks.

I have eaten here a couple of times and found the food to be pretty dull and uninspiring on both occasions. Personally, I don't like the decor much, but I have to say the service was top notch on both occasions. Don't know why they can't get the food act together. A Malyasian friend who joined me on my last visit was also totally unimpressed with the food. Her verdict: 'it sucks'! I really don't think this place deserves the very high ratings it seems to have (and can't understand those ratings, given the mixed reviews).

I've been to the Georgetown - and Raffles, the sister restaurant - a number of times, and have never been disappointed. The Georgetown Experience represents good value for money, the service is uniformly excellent and the food consistently of a high standard. I recommend the Udang Tempura, the Pineapple Paradise and, of course, the Singapore Slings, without which a visit would not be complete.

Having read some of the other reviews, I am at a complete loss; I've never had a comparable experience.
