Matthew Norman - 10/10

Friday, June 25, 2010 - Basque quail with minced pork and cranberries drew a: 'Wow, there's a real culinary intelligence at work here', while the highlight of highlights was caramelised oxtail in red wine, cooked for 36 hours until it was all dark and gooey and wonderfully melty, and exploding with herby-wino-bovine flavour...'I can honestly say,' declared my friend over coffee, 'that I've never had a better lunch in this country.' Nor have I, and in a bold stab at originality let me state this: you simply have to go.

Had dinner last night (Saturday). Food was great, wine was great, service was incredibly intrusive and that alone unfortunately overshadows any good points about the restaurant.

We were given some olives - without us touching it, it was taken away after 5 minutes. Wine glass was filled after every little sip. Plates were taken even before we finished it, on two occasions. They kept re-arranging our table...etc etc... We just felt very rushed and did not feel comfortable at all.

Shame, as they just need to tweak the service and it would be a brilliant restaurant.

Amazing wine list, the tasting menu is full of surprises and is a great value, the Manager a young guy, Ivan is his name, he was amazing, very helpfull and taking care of everything, the staff were very friendly and they treat us like old friends, this was our first time at Cambio de tercio and we ll be back soon!!!

Shame shame shame on the manager in the Tapas bar!!! He ask me and my friend: if you dont like the service, then never come back!!!

The waiter took my plate before I finish food because they rush to get table back in a rush Friday night. I complain this to the manager together with other disappointment in the whole service.

Then that guy replied. ... sure, i will never want to go back! Fino is ten times better!

I think that enough has been written about the food -- it's original, creative etc. Prices are nevertheless somewhat on the high side.

Why doesn't it have a Michelin star? Well, one reason must surely be the pushy approach to service that has been commented on several times. While the staff were pleasant enough (and going on a Saturday lunchtime we weren't rushed), they did recommend a bottle of wine that cost more than twice what we'd asked for (and while it's ok to recommend, it's surely tactful to suggest something in a similar price range), needed a bit of reminding about orders when dishes started coming through, and repeatedly tried topping up wine glasses despite our protests.

They then resort to that sure sign of pushiness over quality, the optional added service charge, and then get all confused when people split the bill.

Overall, our experience was very pleasant, but the constant need to prevent "extras" of this sort being added to an already considerable bill is somewhat wearing. It suggests desperation if not contempt for the customer.

I was particularly struck by two things when having dinner at this restaurant last night: the high quality and creativity of the food was one; the pressure in ordering and thereafter the rushed service was another. I shall not write further on the former because this has already been dealt with comprehensively by other reviewers, save to say that the food is really very good. However, the latter needs to be properly taken into account as much by diners as by the management. Having said that, this should not deter others from enjoying this good restaurant: just be firm and polite - as we were after having been assailed by the staff to take the table's orders on no less than 2 occasions in as many minutes just after being handed the menus: in the end, the staff agreed to leave us alone until we signalled to them that we were ready. Thereafter everything worked perfectly adequately (although our wine glasses were replenished virtually after every sip)! So, all in all, two memories: (i) good food and wine and (ii) rush, rush, rush.

Fantastic innovative Spanish food. Great talent show even in the more traditional dishes, but it was in the EL BULLI tortilla, Foie gras, coca cola, lemon air absolutely fantastic, or the caramelized veal cheeks with apple textures, or the gin and tonic on a plate, where the chef really shows his skills. Add to this the fantastic-efficient service, huge wine list full of surprises and it is easy to understand why it was chosen the best spanish restaurant outside. It could be very expensive, but worth every penny

I took my wife for San Valentines and the tasting menu for the evening was fantastic!!

Foie Gras and Coca Cola with lemon air, suckling pig, cherries with chewing gum ice cream etc etc... I couldn't have given my wife a better treat for San Valentines than this delicious food plus dining next to KYLIE MINOGUE and her boyfriend. We couldn't believe it !

It's always been a favourite of mine but since I moved to Wimbledon I hadn't been for a while.

How could this place not have a Michelin Star ?! still remains a mistery to me. As I think alongside with Zuma they have the most fantastic atmosphere.

Best Spanish food in London that I've seen !

The food at this restaurant was completely ruined by the appalling atitude of the staff in particular the manager who provides the Fawlty Towers example of customer care. We could have forgiven the rushed experience but not the menacing manager. Such a shame for a potentially good restaurant to have no appreciation of how the importance of respect for the customer can be the difference between an excellent dining experience and a nightmare.

Pig Pig's Corner

Pig Pig's Corner

Tuesday, September 15, 2009 - 'Crispy ham and bechamel sauce croquettes, tomato-thyme sauce'. About the same size as ping-pong balls, the crispy exterior belied the incredibly soft and creamy filling. I found the croquettes here less cheesy and potato-ey than other restaurants, making it a lighter more enjoyable snack. The tomato sauce was very aromatic and made a very good dipping sauce. The 'New spicy patatas bravas' was a far cry from the usual fare I'm accustomed to, but in a good way. The potato skin was folded to make a little cup where the spicy tomato sauce was poured into and topped with aioli and chives...
