Banana Tree (Clapham)

I agree with the previous reviewer. They have been constantly packed since they opened in year 2000. That's ten years ago!!! I know cos that was the year I moved into this excellant area and had my first child and now he's ten, and he and his sister regularly enjoys their children's menu! Simply excellant and their best dishes has to be their Laksa, Grilled Pork and Tamarind Aubergine..... at least it my favourite! Can't go wrong with this restaurant.........but can sometime be a tad noisy, but what the hell...... I like it, keeps me feeling young.

Frankly this place really doesn't need a review. I visited on its opening day, many years ago, and it has been full ever since!!! Well priced, perfectly delighful fresh food. Busy, noisy, but brilliant.

I went to Northcote Road for the first time for a night out with some work colleagues for a night out, and someone suggested the Banana Leaf Canteen for dinner after our visit to a couple of bars. I wasn't sure at first as the place was heaving, and to such an extent that the queue was snaking out of the door. I thought it will be one of those chaotic evenings. However, I was pleasently surprised as the evening ended up brilliantly. The food was fresh, varied and absolutely yummy. The atmosphere was a little loud but relaxed and absolutely buzzing, and the service was surprisingly unhurried considering that there was a constant queue throughout our stay. I shall definitely be back to this excellant area for a night out and will definitely be at The Banana Leaf to try their other dishes. Highly recommended!

Great food, absolutely APPALLING service, and that opinion is based on maybe 20 visits - the service has been bad to the point of offensive on every occasion without fail. They do a very nice Laksa though.

Never been treated so rudely in a restauarant. Pad Thai came and didn't look or taste anything like it should - it was basically noodles covered in lots of soy sauce. I expressed my dissatisfaction and the waitress took my plate away - I was then waiting 10 minutes and the manager came back, plonked the plate back down infront of me and said that there was nothing wrong with it and that he wouldn't take it back. At this point i was very angry - my partner had nearly finished his meal (which he said was average) and I said i wouldn't pay for it. After about 5 minutes of arguing with me they took it away, returning ten minutes later to ask if i wanted to order anything else. At this point i just ordered a starter as had lost my appetite - and they made me wait about 15 minutes for this. I normally am a very good tipper - but in this instance i refused to even leave 10% - at which point a disgruntled waitress came over and asked 'was something wrong?' at which point i said yes - the food was bad, thew service was awful and i don't feel anyone should tip for that!. Disappointing as I love places like Fujiyama's, pepper tree, good morning vietnam (much better and cheaper and round the corner from here!)
