what the critics say

The Independent

Amol Rajan - 7/10

Sunday, January 08, 2012 - The duck livers with green beans and tarragon are succulent and sweet, as well as good value at 6.20. The deep-fried calf's brain with tartare sauce is - extremely annoyingly - unavailable, even though it's only 9pm, so I can't tell you whether it's worth the 6.80 asking price. But the braised cuttlefish with red onion and rocket is magnificent: inky and peppery and piquant...Properly British, proudly simple, and professionally delivered - through Hereford Road, gastronomic Hendersonism is thriving in west London too.

Actually, I don't understand what the hype about this place is all about. We were excited to find a place advertised as modern British which serves local produce but the food and service just didn't live up to it's popularity.

Maybe it was the wrong night, but the starters were dry and the other main courses were uninspiring. Worst of all, the presentation of the dishes were simply not passable since all there was on the plate for the quail starter was an overcooked bird and a dab of aioli (which, mind you, was just simply mayonnaise).

What's more? There was a half hour wait before the first course arrived and one full hour until the main course did, on a Monday night when there were 4 tables of people!

I had completed the arduous 10K run in the morning so my lovely wife kindly offered to buy me lunch. We stopped for a quick pint at the friendly Champion and headed down to Hereford Road which had been recommended to us. We were warmly greated on entering and offered a booth style table by the side of the open kitchen. I am a real fan of the open kitchen concept especially when you can watch you food being made. We shared a starter of smoked mackerel and new potatoe salad which was refreshing and tasty. We followed with a superlative rib of beef, steamed greens and roast potatoes. We washed this down with the house red which our very friendly waiter recommended to us ahead of more expensive choices. It was a lovely southern french red, which complemented our meal perfectly.

As the race had been very tough and the conditions very hot, I treated myself to an excellent trifle to finish off. It was very good indeed. The service throughout was friendly and the relatively small team coped well with a restaurant that was full by the time we left. The two chefs out front were kept busy and it was great watching them turn out such lovely food. We were both thoroughly impressed and will pop back again soon.

Saturday, August 06, 2011 - Sea trout, cucumber, chervil, samphire - A crisply fried piece of fish, fresh samphire and a squidge of 100% lemon juice - what more could you ask of your local neighbourhood restaurant? I felt this dish best epitomised the essence of Hereford Road, there is no pomp here, just honest cooking...There isn't anything magical about the cooking, I feel it is very honest, very neighbourly, inviting, laid back, friendly and in many respects, this is what you want your neighbourhood restaurant to be: safe, secure, a place to recharge and to savour every last bite in peace.

Monday, June 07, 2010 - The steak came out already pre-sliced against the grain, and looked perfectly cooked; the exterior had caramelised and developed a crust, whilst the meat inside was rare, pushing medium-rare in places and as juicy as you'd expect. There were no problems with the tenderness of the meat, nor the flavour for that matter...It was equally good with some of the pungent aioli, the strong garlic matching the flavourful beef. The chips are triple cooked and nearly creep into roast potato territory, through size and structure and taste-wise. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, they were a touch too oily but were still delicious.

Friday, April 24, 2009 - The menu at Hereford Road promises like a sugar daddy but delivers like the postal service of Zimbabwe. It sources terrific produce only to treat it with a kind of baffling indifference. Food is consistently underseasoned, and I find the studied inelegance of the presentation distracting, rather than comforting or homely…Pricing is fair and service is friendly. The ethos, you see, is faultless: I just can’t say that for the execution.
