A friend and I went to this restaurant for the first time this Sunday at around 2pm. We were pretty shocked at how awful the food was. We ordered two gourmet burgers and to be honest we might as well have bought them from a burger van, the burger buns were cheap and stale, the burgers were tiny and unappetising with a tiny bit of green salad on the side which was almost black and slimy, the chips were under cooked and soggy. We told the waitress the food was awful but she just smiled and did nothing about it. We won't be going back again and cannot recommend it.

I’m not a fussy eater and I have never left a message on one of these sites before. My terrible dining experience at this restaurant has led me to source this restaurant online and warn other potential diners.
My partner and I ordered two main courses and waited 50 minutes. That was fine as I’m happy to wait but it did become the theme of the night. My partner ordered the sausage and mash - two of the sausages were inedible. Three diners around us also complained about their food. The waiter must have been experienced in this situation as he happily accepted the negative feedback and did nothing about it on all occasions!
We were then left for a considerable period of time after our plates had been cleared to order pudding. We ordered pudding after a prolonged period of time our waitress said she would try and find out what was going on but seemed to have forgotten as she avoided our table as much as possible. We left after 45 mins and went to pay. No explanation was offered by the waiter (again lots of bland smiling) but then there was a queue of people waiting to complain.
There were three other parties surrounding our table and all three made complaints!!! This is not a coincidence. This is a shame - the menu is promising and the décor beautiful. I hope that the owner reads this and can pick up this shambles of a restaurant. I felt really cross after this dining trauma.
Food - awful, if it arrives
Service - awful, awful, awful - with a bland smile
Value for money – we were robbed.
Advice - avoid like the plague.

We have had lunch here before and dinner, lunch was quite nice and dinner okay, but this was a while back..
However a few weeks ago we went in on a Sunday at around 6pm, a couple of tables were occupied. The restaurant was quite chilly, this had also been noted before.
I ordered fish and chips. The batter was hard and the fish almost non-existent. The chips were not edible.
When the waitress cleared our table, I was asked was everything okay, I obviously said no & told her why, she just smiled and quite happily cleared away without another word.
At 7pm we were paying the bill, when a party of about six came in and asked for a table. (On the door they state that they close at 8pm on a Sunday) They were turned away and told that the restaurant was now closed. They just all looked at one and other in disbelief and walked out.
In the summer they were packed out and a good place for people with children to go, but I hope they do not just rely on that.
We are really disappointed, because we thought this was another good option for eating in the village.
I only hope the owner reads these reviews and sorts things out.
By the way, the cheese sauce should definitely not be cold.

I had the worst meal of my entire life in this restaurant!
We visited for dinner on a Sunday at what seemed to us to be a reasonable time to eat, about 8 o'clock. There were a few other tables, but they were all finishing up and left while we were waiting for our food. At this point we were optimistic, our waitress was polite and we were excited to try the waffle concept. However we were also freezing and wet from the rain. The room didn't seem to be heated despite the fact it it was the middle of winter and our bottle of red was just as cold.
I was counting on my main course (we had skipped starters) to warm me up, but that didn't happen. The waffle part was warm, and there were some mushrooms on it that were also warm. The ham was cold (which is fair enough) but what makes me wonder if I was the victim of a practical joke is that the whole thing was covered in lashings of cold cheese sauce, as though straight from the fridge! Does anyone know if this dish is actually supposed to be like this?! Swimming in a slimy, cold, cheese flavoured custard? Obviously, the plate was also stone cold.
The waitress did not return to check if we were ok, so we asked for the bill and attempted to finish our wine. As if that wasn't bad enough, the chef then came out to the bar and said "come on, drink up" just within earshot. The other staff shushed him and sniggered. If they were closing they could have told us when we asked for a table, giving us the option to have a speedy meal or go elsewhere.
Once again no one returned to collect our bill, so we placed it on the bar in front of the bar man and another member of staff. They did not say thank you or good bye, despite the fact that we did.
Oh my God!!!!! I feel cheated out of the money this meal cost!

we've visited Eat 17 on numerous occassions for breakfast since it opened a while back. Everytime we have had a pleasant experience, great food/coffee/juices/service, but unfortunately, on the last few visits, its seems to have gone downhill somewhat; awful service, uncooked food, expensive extras.. (95p for 2 small bits of toast..!) surely toast should come with a 'english' breakfast???
Im hoping they havent got too big for their boots .. it seemed remarkably quiet this morning for a Sunday, when it is usually busy and vibrant.
Come on Eat 17..pull ya socks up .. its been great having somewhere to get a decent coffee/breakfast in the 'village'..
please dont get complacent on us!
M.

I have eaten at Eat17 on numerous occasions since it first opened and am sad to say that standards have fallen. Last Friday I had a terrible experience: the menu has been drastically reduced; I waited 35 minutes after ordering only to be told the requested dish had sold out; the food when it arrived was luke-warm; when I complained I was advised the only option was to microwave it!!! Spills on the floor were not cleaned up, nor was the table wiped down. I certainly will not be going back.

Eat 17 is no longer all about waffles. They've changed their menu to a modern British cafe style and have opened a fab little deli next door with cheeses from Neal Yard's Dairy, sausages from the East London Sausage Company and fresh bread. The 3 times I've been have be great. I particualry recommend their Homemade Chicken Liver Pate which was light, smooth, and delicious. They also have a great breakfast menu, and of course still do wonderful waffles. They're also licenced.

A Waffle restaurant is a strange and deeply flawed idea - who wants a whole menu of waffles and certainly waffles in the evening with a glass of wine is just plain odd. Having said that, the waffles are delicious and for a family brunch this place is perfect. When we went with loads of kids the other Saturday the food was delicious and the service was keen. It's also great to have the kids welcomed and not just tolerated. We'll certainly be going back but I've still to be convinced about the evening meal with waffle. Maybe I'll be a convert yet.
