Waterloo Bar & Grill

We were booked for a pre-theatre meal at 18:00, first course arrived at 18:50. The service was dreadful, and my partner ended up helping herself to dessert, and eating it with a knife and folk. Quick thinking on her part, other wise we would have still been there when the curtain went up at the Old Vic. I would not eat here again.

Simply. The worst. Fish and chips. Ever. Mussels were quite nice. Spinach was excellent. Drinks were comically expensive. Next time I'm at the Old Vic I will go somewhere else.

This first-time visit got off to a bad start: 5.30 pm arrival; young woman on reception had no record of my booking (which I certainly made, as I had discussed the menu with them) and made it sound as if it was my fault. Then she confirmed that a table would be available, but "we shall need it back at 7.15": fair enough, but there had been no welcome, and no graciousness about the fact the booking was not recorded.

From this point is got steadily better. The waiters had better manners, and served with some grace. Food generally well up to standard for the price, except for gritty spinach. Good wine list: not too long, with some interesting exotica such as an Austrian white and an Argentinian red which were excellent.

We left at 7.10, with the restaurant barely 30% full.

Get the welcome right, Waterloo Brasserie!

The food was average but the service & general atmosphere was poor. The waiters were off hand and arrogant; one asking us for our order while wiping the next table and interupting our conversation mid-stream quite rudely.

We ordered a sweet and after 2 reminders it was clear that they`d forgotten about it altogether. In the end we told them to forget it and also to remove the service charge from the bill. We won`t be going back.
