Fujisan

I'd echo most other people's comments. The restaurant feels very amateurish, is lifeless inside and has disinterested staff. The food does actually taste nice for some reason (which is why I've had a few takeaways from there) but it is not at all authentically Japanese, and is expensive for what it is. The chef has quite obviously never actually eaten Japanese food. In the West End you can pick up a far superior, real Japanese meal for less than eating at Fujisan so, to be honest, I can't see how this restaurant would survive if there was any competition.

I can echo the comments below. We had lunch today, a good price for indifferent food. The place looks nice enough, but we only deduced where we were expected to sit as the sullen waif of a waitress picked up two sets of chopsticks from the table set for four and sleepwalked past us. I sensed it wasn't going to be a big tipping day. The tempura wasn't too bad, my girlfriend had some a vegetarian noodle dish, but if was chinese takeaway slops. I've had worse and for a fiver it's a cheap lunch, but bring your own smiling friends. If you want authentic Japanese food, and something like the superb service you should expect from a Japanese restaurant, try somewhere else.

Despite the appalling service and non-authentic Japanese food, I am drawn back to Fujisan time and time again. In fact I recently offended a professional masseuse when I had to confess that I was dribbling through the table, not because of the high quality of the massage but because I was daydreaming about the tofu bento box I was planning for lunch from Fujisan. I can only conclude that the chef puts a load of MSG in the tucker, because I cannot explain otherwise why I am such an addict.

Now, unlike other reviewers, I am not Japanese and I have never been to Japan, and so I cannot comment on whether the food that they serve at Fujisan is 100% authentic. What I do feel qualified to tell you is that it is delicious, fresh and great value for money.
I am a fairly regular customer here and have developed an unhealthy passion for their Age-Tofu Bento Box; this dish manages to transform the much maligned bean curd into something utterly sublime and worringly addictive.
Like the other Bentos, it is served with 2 pieces of sushi, rice, spinach, shredded raw carrot and sliced red chilli. It is both filling and light, which means I usually indulge in the deliciously fresh salmon sashimi and edamamme beforehand without feeling like the glutton I am.
I have always found the service attentive and efficient, and whilst I agree that it is not the most atmospheric of dining rooms, it does have a quiet charm that allows for conversation and full appreciation of the food.
I thoroughly recommend Fujisan to both locals and those further afield - I have a friend who regularly travels from Islington to eat there with me!
