I have to say that I have been to Water Margin a few times in 2009 and every time I have been very disappointed. Initially it was a great restaurant but they are trying to cut down so much that every meal is just not as good as they used to. The laska soup now do not have any fish ball, egg or prawns. All you get is some plain noodles in some watery soup and taste disgusting !!! Never again will I go there anymore !!!

As others have said, the food at Water Margin is great, and the prices are FAR better than in Chinatown or Zone 1 restaurants of similar quality. Service is great - very fast turnaround from the kitchen and friendly waiters. Takeaway is reasonable and quick, and a common option. Only downside is a limited selection of vegetarian offerings, some of which aren't really veggie (oyster sauce is a common ingredient) and seem to be lacking compared to the main offerings (especially the roast meats which tempt passers-by.)

I thought it was about time I reviewed this restaurant. I've been coming here since I was little.

This was probably one of the first oriental restaurants in the area and I'm not surprised it's lasted this long. To me it's something of an institution these days. And their chicken and cashew nut dish is just as good now as when I was 5 years old. Basically I like their food and always have.

Not sure what to say on the atmosphere front. It's not really changed at all since the 80s. It's had the obligatory licks of paint and changes of carpet over the years, but the look of the place is just the same as it was back then. Smart and clean, but not outstanding. Understand I'm giving it a high mark because of the personal nostalgic value for me. I don't think I'm too far off target, though.

Service is very friendly and right on the money. Enough said.

And lastly, the prices are just as great as they've always been. Sure, I wasn't paying the bill at 5 years old, but ever since I've been old enough to, I've had nothing to complain about.

I think I've now lost count of the number of times I've been here. Well done, Water Margin. I wish you the best for the decades to come!

My absolute favourite restaurant! The atmosphere is a little stifled but I haven't found any restaurant that matches up to their food. Take family or friends and prepare to fight over the scraps.

I've never been disappointed at this restaurant and this weekend intend to celebrate my fathers 93rd birthday there. Apart from the many and varied items on the main menu, the cantonese meats hanging in the front window are great and must be tried.

An amazing place to dine. The food is superb, the service is lovely, they aim to please, (and I'm telling you the do every time!!) And I always get value my money.

Which is a good thing seeing as my family's eyes are almost as big as our stomachs, so we end up with a table covered with lots of plates holding a variety of culinary treats! And in the rare cases that we don't manage to finish our order, they are more than happy to put in a doggy bag so you can have it for breakfast (ok that might just be my family).

But to some up, once you go to Water Margin you'll be hard pressed to find anywhere even close to this little gem.

After reading all the comments on here I decided to book a table for myself and my family for the day after Boxing Day. I have to say that after visiting here I shall not be spending time and money going to Chinatown as often for meals. I arrived well before the time I had booked and watched numerous happy people enter and leave the restaurant either as diners or those who popped in for a quick takeaway and most of these people were Chinese which I took to be a good sign. The food here is the best I and my family have sampled in a long time, the service was prompt and extremely courteous and the price astonishing A definite value for money little gem in North London

Water Margin is certainly one of the most delicious Chinese restaurants in London, even more so than the more expensive locations in China Town.

Although the place is slightly dated in apperance, and may not have the most upbeat atmosphere, it basks in glory of some of the most delectable food I've ever tasted. From regular dishes - duck, pork, chicken and a heap of boiled rice to the more specialty creations - it's always a treat to eat, and even more so your wallet!

Whether it's for a quick takeaway in the evening, or for a family night out, Water Margin has given some me some of the best meals to date. Have been going there all 21 years of my life, and won't stop any time soon!

Definitely one of the rare treats of Golders Green.

Agree with the comments this is a top restaurant 10/10 . The lunch at £5.50 for two courses is a bargain.
