I have been a regular at Shilpa for a couple of years now (see my review from 2008 below). It has proved itself to be pretty much unique among London restaurants in never varying from its very high standards, where others wax and wane. I was there last night and it prompted me to visit this site again to recommend it.

Do not be put off by the rather basic exterior (and slightly scruffy interior). Service is charming but can be a little haphazard. Just go for the food. Every foodie we send there is blown away by what this place turns out at ridiculously cheap prices.

I have noticed a good mix of people in there - locals, business groups from the nearby hotel and gatherings of South Indians looking for a reminder of home. Tends to prove its universal appeal.

Their grilled scallops are fabulous. Be bold and go for dishes you may not have heard of - the King Prawn Moilee is a thing of wonder, Erachi Olathiyathu (a dryish lamb curry) is a show stopper. Their fish curries are superb. If your courage fails they even do a version of Chicken Tikka Masala which is gorgeous. They will increase or decrease spice levels on request but try to go up to their level because their use of green chilli is a bit of a trademark.

Just go!

We have visited Shilpa 3 times with friends over the past 6 months. Always excellent, and well priced for the quality. Decor a bit cafe like - but that brings me back to eating experiences in Asia.

We took a Sri Lankan friend here who is also very familiar with South Indian food, and he gave it the thumbs up.

Just a shame that it is 1/2 empty most evenings - I think the locals don't know what they are missing!

The food and service was excellent. This was the second time we went and as before had a good experience. The 40% discount is a huge bonus on top. I would definately recommend this restaurant to couples, familes or anyone looking for a good meal and service.

An American In London

Sunday, September 20, 2009 - Masala dosa is a must at any south Indian meal, and Shilpa's version was a filling and tasty way to start our dinner. The pancake was hot and crispy, and the spicy potato filling was well complemented by spicy sambal and soothing coconut chutney...The prawn moilee may be the most expensive dish on Shilpa's menu, and both times I've had it, it's been worth every penny. I loved the curry's fragrant turmeric and ginger mellowed by the sweet coconut milk, and the dish's seven or eight prawns were beautifully cooked.

Tuesday, July 21, 2009 - As there was a strong fishy presence on the menu, I also opted for the Kerala fish curry, with lots of coconut milk and kerala cocum. We were totally swooning over this one - creamy and coconutty and wonderfully flavoured and spicy. The bowl was licked clean...I also had to try their Kerala paratha, a Keralan delicacy, so says the menu. This was the closest thing I'd had to a Malaysian/Indian roti canai; it was gorgeously flaky.
