One of my favourite restaurants in Richmond.
The decor is unpretentious and I enjoy the sunken seating when you have big group of people as it adds to the experience.
The starters are varied and generally do not disappoint. The gyoza are lovely and the Ebi and Vegetable tempura are both well done in a light and cripsy batter. Edamame and Miso soup are as expected.
The sushi is very fresh and varied, although they do not always have Toro (fatty tuna) in stock. I would recommend the white knight roll (to die for!) and the spider roll as well as selection of nigiri. Nanban Chicken Noodles are also very good and have a bit of a kick to them!
The Manager, as the other reviewer mentioned, is a cut above the rest. He is very welcoming, recognises regular customers and always like to suggest a couple of things to try from the menu.
The only down side is the drinks menu as the drinks (including soft drinks) are overpriced.
All in all a great dining experience.

MAKI is THE restaurant in Richmond! For two reasons:
1. THE FOOD: it should please everyone: from meat lovers, via sushi addicts to vegetarians. Try the soft-shell crab, the kaisa salad, the duck salad (a fairly recent dish on the menu), or the oceon don. They are terrific! The bento boxes are great value for money - especially at lunch time Monday-Friday. All the raw fish dishes are very very good and super-fresh. Even the desserts are worth it: the Japanese cakes and the amazing sesame seed ice-cream... There is a also a good selection of drinks, try hot sake (Japanese friends of ours say it's a crime to heat up sake when it's good quality, but we love it!).
2. BOBBY, THE MANAGER: a very welcoming, elegant and efficient gentleman. It is always a pleasure to talk to him.

Four of us went there last night and all of us really enthused about the food. It was all beautifully presented, tasted sensational and covered a great range of flavours. For starters we shared aubergine, scallops, soft shelled crab and chicken yakitori. For mains it was seafood soba noodles, hot & sour prawns, beef teriyaki and dragon sushi. We started out fairly ignorant about Japanese food but the staff were great at explaining the options and we left as real converts.
