Fox and Anchor

We stayed at the Fox and Anchor over a Friday and Saturday night, booked in the Smithfield room after reading the Times review. This would be great for a mid week break but don't recommend for a summer weekend unless you bring ear plugs!
Pub grub was good, as was the wine and beer, however what we didn't realise was that there was a club and nightclub just down the road (literally), so until the early hours we had the full bass from the nightclub bouncing through the room, then fighting, swearing and shouting up the street until about 4am. 6am onwards street cleaning began. Thank god for the bose player but have to say the sound of people vomiting and fighting is a great passion killer. No air conditioning and the top of the hotel is hot, so had to keep the windows open.
So...good room, good food, shame about the location, though maybe a back room is better. Think a better bet would be the Malmaison hotel itself a few doors away.

A snug pub that can get crowded and noisy very easily,so not a place for a quiet/romantic/business type meal. The menu is basically British a la Canteen.
Some things work well and some do not.The fish and chips was delish, with nice fresh fish, great mushy peas, and ok chips. The roast of the day is also uneven-the pork was good, but the duck was tough and difficult to handle on the small tables. The starters are of the smoked salmon/terrine variety and nothing special.Nice selection of unusual beers to sample. The head honcho(Irish) is very welcoming and on top of things. The staff seem to be East European with uneven English.Probably this is more of a guy place .
