The Regent
our comments
The Kensal Green area is evidently not short of a pub or two. With such competition keeping those in the business on their toes, this can only mean good news for the punter in search of more than just your run-of-the-mill boozer.
The Regent re-emerged last year under new ownership ready to compete with the best of them but even with competition practically in its shadows, this pub clearly has no issues attracting a young and seemingly loyal clientele. A combination of low lighting, sedate background music, ornate chandeliers, discreetly placed palm trees, luxurious red curtains, inviting sofas, fireplaces and well placed candles and flowers all contribute to achieving a genuinely relaxed and homey feel.
The centrally located and well-stocked bar boasts an ability to quench any drinking desire with a good selection of beers on tap, classic cocktails and wines by the glass. The large bowls of savoury popcorn are there to provide a welcome accompaniment to your drinks, a custom not seen often enough this side of the Mediterranean. There is a spacious walled garden at the back of the pub offering an extra seating area with more squidgy sofas and being heated in the winter, it remains a popular place to be whatever the weather.
If you are like me, food must feature in any evening out so before long you will be keen to find out what the Regent has to offer. A peruse of the menu will reassure you that you are in a good place and you will soon notice that this is no ordinary pub grub as there are plenty of starters, mains and homemade desserts to choose from. The current winter menu offers an enticing selection of comfort food, with starters, such as the deliciously creamy garlic mushrooms served with plenty of bread for dipping. Mains include sausages and mash and homemade steak pie for those in search of the more traditional style pub food and the tasty fish pie is guaranteed to warm the cockles. If you are up for a challenge, the recently launched burger menu offers a mesmerizing and uniquely creative choice each one available with a beef, chicken or veggie burger. I couldn’t help but notice the huge burgers floating past to nearby tables and had to succumb - with chips - only to discover that the real challenge wasn’t to finish it but to attempt to eat it with decorum. Be warned alas: come hungry as all portions are impressive (just the way it should always be, I say!). If you still have space or are just plain gluttonous, the home made desserts will beckon and it would be a shame after all for someone to have gone through all that trouble for nothing now, wouldn’t it?
The Regent also offers a Sunday roast with all the trimmings if you are lucky enough to be in the area.
The service is always friendly and our attentive waitress Sara was happily on hand to advise. Evidently a pub of choice for a Friday night out, The Regent offers an easy going and welcome reassurance that there is indeed life outside of work.
