Matsuri (St James's)
your comments review this restaurant and win a bottle of champagne
why cant people take into consideration the rent restaurants have to pay to have a location on St James street, its only a rip off when the food and service is poor which it isn't.
you shouldn't go out for a meal in one of the most prestigious areas of London if you're watching the pennies (by the way I am not rich myself) I just unsure I have enough to splurge.
You can see Matsuri buys top quality produce on teppanyakis all your food has to look good, each piece as well as tasting good so therefore rising their food costs or they could do it on a budget and serve you rubbish and relocate to Streatham.
Also when in restaurants always state TAP water, you will always be given bottled if not, after all they are there to make money!

Totally over-priced. Food was good, but nothing to write home about. Rolls were very small, and plain. The worse thing was we asked for water and they didn't ask us if we wanted tap or bottled (we wanted tap) so we just assumed we were given tap, only to be charged 9.80 pounds for two bottles of water! Total rip off.

the place is really good, I am a regular customer for about 4 years. The food and service is the same it have been - high level. what attracts most to Matsuri is that the food is cooked in front of you. you can also ask for a private room: once me and my frieinds were given a table in the private room and we didn't even ask for that, so it was great.
I would recommend it to everyone, who wants to enjoy Japanese food, while being entertained at the same time.

Food was good, service was decent, but very very expensive! So go with a big wallet.

Let's be straight about this: You go to this restaurant to see food being cooked in front of you. It's part of the show. What arrives on your plate is perfect, but you may need to take out a loan or be the owner of a small TV company to pay for it.
Food-wise, it's quite obvious that everything is fresh. Given that you see raw ingredients turn into cooked ingredients right in front of you convinces me of that fact.
The service is second-to-none. From the waitresses that manage the tables to the chefs that prepare the food, everything is delivered with a flourish - sometimes literally (we saw steaks somersaulting on the hot-plates at one point). Best of all, this is not packaging without substance; what you get really does taste quite good.
I find the place very atmospheric. Some might regard it as slightly spartan, somewhat reminiscent of the interior of a Star Trek conference room. But I felt as though I was in the middle of a Tokyo restaurant, which is what this place is all about.
My only gripe was the bill. It was far too much I'd say. This is obviously not a problem when the company is paying, but if you're using your own funds to foot the bill, you might feel a bit of a sting.

This place is best appreciated by Japanese tourists or people with expense accounts. I arrived early for dinner so that I waited for my friend in the ground floor reception area where the bar is situated. It is a little gloomy with the atmosphere of a dentist's waiting room. I was served a Tio Pepe in a thimble-sized glass with no Japanese crackers or other nibbles in sight. At least it was the genuine article but this luxury costs £6. My friend arrives, gulps down his thimble, and down we go for the real excitement. Kimono-clad waitresses and real Japanese chefs centre-stage ready to perform miracles for you ! We had the cheapest multi-course menu which contained the famous lobster-tails, quite as miniaturized as the sherries upstairs, and a couple of sakis, followed by a couple of their trays of sample sakis. The total bill with service and VAT for two came to £191.00. Although the food and service was good, and the area is St. James, I cannot honestly describe this good value for money.
