Zoe Williams - 3/5

Sunday, January 01, 2012 - My beef goulash with egg noodles (teeny things that looked like tortellini, but were solid noodle) was lovely; exceedingly tender, richly beefy, it melted away as if desperate to be eaten. There was a gherkin, too, which reinforced my view that there's almost no meal that isn't improved by a gherkin...I'm loth to criticise this place, even though bits of it are idiosyncratic. It seems the accent is on authenticity rather than adapting the food for a mainstream British palate, and that's fine. I will probably stick to the sausages in the future. I do not consider this a hardship.

My snitchel - the place's trademark dish and most expensive thing on the menu - was rather soft from the outside. The waitress was patronising beyong belief - the Manager of the place saved the situation with his friendliness and smile once I was about to take off.

Overpriced, canteen looking, and the last thing I needed is to pay money for food and been told off on my Sunday afternoon.

Never returning again and spreading across London the appropriate word of mouth.

I was taken to Kipferl for lunch by an Austrian friend who assured it would be the 'Real Deal'. Never having been to Austria before I was in splendid ignorance as to what this could mean so I was delighted to find it meant excellent food, friendly staff, delicious beer & wine (it was a Friday!) all at reasonable prices. My first time but definitely not my last!

I had high hopes when visiting this cafe/restaurant especially since I gave up going to Ottolenghi. The service was far too laid back. I had to get up and remind the waiter asking if he had forgotten about my order. He very obnoxiously said ''no'' but It still took half an hour for a bread roll, butter and jam to arrive and when it finally did the order was wrong and the coffee was cold. There was absolutely no cooking involved in this order and should have taken at most 10 mins to arrive.

Staff at till were equally incompetent, mistakes with prices staff falling over each other etc etc. Took about a further 15 mins to pay after being charged wrong price.

I will not go again and definitely will not recommend. Staff could do with some training. ALL NEED TO STEP UP A PACE AND WAKE UP!!

Went on a Saturday when it is nice and quiet round this part of town. The deli/cafe is about 4 or five tables squeezed round the central till area with Austrian produce on display around the place.

The clientelle seem to be a lot of 'international' couples - Japanese guy with English girl, German girl with American guy etc. We (Slovakian girl and English guy) had liver dumpling soup which was really good and the Kipferl Special, a choice of sausages with three salad samplers which was OK. Staff were very friendly although getting rather stressed at having to serve the grand sum of four tables!

All in all a pleasant place to spend a few quiet moments. If you wanted to buy a sachertorte then all the better.

Bellaphon

Bellaphon

Wednesday, September 02, 2009 - Kipferl has been around for more than six years and a thoroughly amiable Austrian chap with a rich sense of humour runs it..my special lunch consisted of potato, cucumber, lentil and red pepper salads plus rye bread and a Kasekrainer sausage. The latter is a smoked variety with small chunks of cheese embedded...Vienna's iconic Sachertorte. Although edged in terms of sinful indulgence by Bea's German Chocolate Cake, it didn't disappoint. Moist, rich and not too sweet; it's worth coming back here for.
