Quo Vadis Restaurant In London

Sunday, October 19, 2008 - Let’s be very clear. Quo Vadis in Dean Street, Soho, is fantastically good in every way. Food, ambience, service. For years it was a dump. Then my friend Joseph Ettedgui (he’s doing up Mirabelle) bought it from Marco Pierre White and promptly sold it on to Sam and Eddie Hart...It really is the new Ivy. I like the Ivy food, but the grub at Quo Vadis is incomparably better.

I ate lunch with a couple of friends at Quo Vadis last Friday and I was truly amazed at the quality of this restaurant. Not only was the food delicious but the service was outstanding.

The menu is quite lengthy so it took us a while to choose our dishes but the delightful waitress was patient and more than happy to explain the dishes that we queried

I could see one of the owners, Eddie Hart, greeting people at the door and fastidiously checking the tables were properly laid out. At one point he came to check we enjoyed our meal and took our orders for dessert. By the way, he's very cute!

I can highly recommend the chips (triple-cooked I think), the rib of Dexter (very very large steak and not for the faint hearted!), crab linguine and whitebait

There is a £2 pp cover charge and this covers olives, bread and unlimited chilled filtered water. In total we paid approx £60 per person - this was for three courses and a glass of wine each.

I cannot wait to return!

High expectations were generally fulfilled on our first visit to the Hart brothers' latest venture. It's an attractive space as others have noted, but I wouldn't want to eat at one of the tables in the small bar area.

My courgette flowers and saddle of lamb were exemplary, wife's crab likewise but a "fatty" piece of veal did not find favour. Daughter raved about her Dover sole. Desserts were of course of high quality, but I thought they lacked inspiration. Maybe our choices were not the best and others may have better luck. Service couldn't be faulted.

The first measure of our experience is whether we would go back. Most definitely, but if you want a drink at the bar and a bottle of wine on the table, be ready to pay £70-£80 per head.

We visited early on a Saturday evening. It was a little empty when we arrived but it quickly filled up. The dining room is beautiful with lots of character.

We ordered wine by the glass, the riesling, sauvignon blanc, the rioja and the pinot which were all very good. For starters we had the crab which was very basic but very nice and the courgette flowers which were delicious. For main we both had the fillet, perfectly seasoned and cooked as we had ordered which came with triple cooked chips and a huge jug of bernaise sauce. We also ordered some spinach which was probably the nicest spinach I have ever had! For pudding we shared the bitter chocolate cake with pistachio ice cream which was superb. Coffees were also good.

There was only one small hitch and that was that I found a small piece of cellophane on my plate, I have no idea where it came from, whether it was in the sauce or under the steak. It didn't really spoil my meal since I fortunately noticed it before inadvertently putting it in my mouth. I did politely point it out to the waiter who collected our plates however and he was very apologetic. Without asking, he also deducted the price for our coffees and pudding which was appreciated.

Staff were amazing. Everyone of the waiters were professional, friendly and polite throughout our time there.

The menu is quite extensive with so many good options, it took us at least 15 minutes to decide what to have! The food is generally very basic, nothing too fancy, but of very high quality and I would definitely like to go back again.

Four of us generally enjoyed our meal here - the atmosphere is nicely "clubby" (lots of suits the night we went), and the food included an excellent fish soup, perfectly cooked lamb and very well-received skate. The summer pudding was one of the best I've ever had - perfectly balanced between sweet and sharp, and lots of juice.

However, I would agree with other reviewers that the service still needs sharpening up. It's not that it was exactly bad - just rather disorganised and consequently a little slow. There didn't seem to be a single waiter responsible for our table, which would tighten things up quite a bit. At the moment perhaps best to avoid if you need a meal in a hurry.

Went today for lunch and will be going back. Great interior, good menu and the £2 cover charge per person for olives, bread and water was a nice surprise on the bill.

Went for lunch on Saturday. Had the fish soup which was divine, never had such good fish soup in my life followed by crab tagliatelle ... delicious (a tad too much tarragon though). The only slight glitch in the meal was that I said to the waiter that I would like the tagliatelle to be "al dente" and to my disbelief he had never heard of the word. I think that someone who works in a restaurant should either be trained properly or not be in the restaurant business at all if they do not know what a simple word like al dente means. My friend had the dressed crab (equally delicious) and eggs benedict made with artichokes and mushrooms.

I shall definitely be going back. Maybe by this time the waiter will have learned what al dente means.

I have eaten at Quo Vadis with my wife twice during the last three weeks and have had an excellent meal on both occasions. The restaurant itself is bright and fresh but is sophisticated enough to let you know that this is a seriously good restaurant without being overpowering. The menu, although not overly long, has everything I like and the prices are very reasonable, especially for central London. The food is simple and straight forward and the service is friendly and efficient. I highly recommend it.

friendly, helpful and good quality food.

Good portions, the standard £2 cover charge for each person is an excellent idea.

crab tagliatelle veal, dover sole excellent value.

let's just hope that they keep the standards up and prices under control.

Despite going in the opening week, Quo Vadis lived up to and even surpassed expectations. The night I went with two friends, Eddie Hart was there and greated us like old friends. The interior is beautiful and the fact they have left features such as the interior mirrors and the front windows in-tact all add to ambience of the restaurant. I had the fresh water mussels, the 28 Day Lincoln Red Beef with Chips (shared with a friend) and between the three of us we shared profiteroles and lemon tart - all deliecious. It has got to register up there with the best! The service was friendly and very efficient and the staff looked happy to be there - somewhat of a rareity these days!! I look forward to returning soon to try other dishes one the menu that caught my eye!

After reading the write up in Metro we stopped off at Quo Vadis on the way to see the Jersey Boys last week. Although they didn't have a pre theatre menu the staff helpfully talked us through the dishes suitable for a quick turnaround in order to get us out in time. I had the sea urchin to start - served out of the shell on teaspoons over ice with just a lemon accompaniment which was delicious and fresh. My partner opted for the steak tartar which was similarly good and perfectly seasoned. We followed up with veal cutlet with a califlower puree and gnocchi pasta with pesto. We shared a chocolate cake for dessert and had plenty of time to spare before the show started. With a glass of wine each we spent around £80. Definitely recommended.

Saturday, August 09, 2008 - The iconic Quo Vadis, once a Marco Pierre White bastion, has a makeover from the owners of Fino and Barrafina. The low-ceilinged room now has yellow walls, wooden floor and modern prints on the walls, but the stained glass windows remain. Under the new ownership, where is Quo Vadis going?
