your comments review this restaurant and win a bottle of champagne
I hope that I got this restaurant on a bad day.
A group of us went on a twickenham match day so the place was very full and the waiters very busy. We, therefore, had some sympathy when having asked for the menu several times the starter from the 'set menu' suddenly arrived. This starter was a quite tasty smoked salmon and pretty revolting salmon mousse combo. These were cleared and then the main course was a very average steak (we were told they all came rare but they were actually where all well done and had clearly sat somewhere for a while) with school style vegetables. We drank a drinkable red wine and guinesses (poured from the can) but no more than 2 -3 glasses/pints per person.
Now as I said, it was a match day and we were a large group - rushed service and a set menu is fine. What is not fine is the £825 bill we were presented with (£75/head). After a discussion, the owner reduced our bill to £40/head - still too much for what we actually received.
The slightly unpleasant feeling about the whole situation was it felt like a calculated ploy. They had decided that they did not need repeat business for match days, so forced the set menu and then charge as much as they possibly could in the hope people paid without protest. In the end we paid half as much as the table next door - who had been caught in exactly the same circumstances and left equally unhappy.
