I love Khan's. From the line-up in the coat hall waiting for a table, to the paper table cloths unceremoniously ripped off your table to be replaced by a clean one, to the hurried shouted out orders taken, to the arrival of the wonderful food, to the quiet that descends on the table as everyone loses themselves in the food, to the friendly waiters who, despite language barriers, gave toys and attention to my 2 year old.

I travel from the U.S. to London frequently. EVERY time I land, there are two things I must do first to settle in. The first is to take the Tube to Trafalgar Square and spend some time there. The second is dinner that night at Khan's.

It's not just dinner. It's an event.

I've brought all of my family members and three of my friends there. It remains for them, as well, one of the big highlights of their visits.

As a single, I am in Khan's every week for the vegetable thali. Yes - I said "vegetable thali."

This review is therefore based solely on that product, which is, I think, the best deal in the restaurant:

at just under £8, it's great value:: Popadum, Naan, Sag, Alu Gobi, Mixed Veg., Raita, and Dhal - all served with rice.

The service is not great, but the waiters are fine if you accost them in a friendly way. I normally just wander up to the desk to pay my bill, otherwise one could wait all day.

Great fuel to set you up for the week. It's open ALL DAY on Saturdays and sundays so you can just cruise in and enjoy.

(By the way, I have had their giant Tandoori Prawns as well and those are also good. I cannot speak for the meat dishes - had them some years ago and didn't like. But the veg are great.)

Been back here after an absence of 2-3 years and my word has the service and quality slipped. We had 2 cokes, 1 juice, 2 starters, 2 mains (chicken chilli masala and prawn curry), 2 garlic naan and 1 rice.

The service was appalling with unfriendly waiters, the food took ages to arrive (on the grounds that it was fresh..what a lie).

We had meat samoosa (ok) and onion bajee (bodering on stale). The starters took at least 20mins to get there.

The mains had a very processed taste with an excessive use of food colouring and additives. I enjoyed the naan but lets be honest here, its quite difficult to get naan wrong.

Overall, the bill was £30 with 10% added in automatically for service which I felt was cheeky. I will not be returning here again. Its the end of an era.

I used to live in the area in the 70s-80s and Khan's used to be a regular haunt. I went there last night for the first time in ages and was sorely disappointed. I used to regard Khan's as the best standard Indian restaurant who served a great variety of meat and vegetable dishes and delicious breads, and now everything is tasteless (pathetic Pasanda and Butter Chicken drowning in sauce, aubergine swelling in ghee) and now they don't serve alcohol (you can't even bring any). It must have changed management - the service was never particularly friendly and it's always been a quick in-out eatery but our waiter was determinedly sour-faced until it was bill-paying time, so we didn't tip him and won't be going back. Shame, another one bites the dust. 15/07/07

Believe me guys, I am/was this close to giving this restaurant maybe 7 stars on average for all categories. Not a fine dining restaurant, that's acceptable. A decent Indian menu with the usual, that's acceptable. Crowded and tightly packed tables, that's ok too, not too fussy about that. Restaurant trying to rob customers ... yes, you read it right the first time...it was not a rip off- but a robbery

here's how it happened:

7pm - enter restaurant

730pm - eat

9pm - tables are cleared

945pm - bill and change arrives

Yes ... the bill and change took 45mins to arrive ... no they didn't take a bus to the bank to get it either. Here's why: my bill=19.79 pounds. I put down a 20 pound note. Waiter assumes 21p was tips. No receipt, no bill arrives. Date gets uncomfortable. 25 mins later, I ask for my change. 20 mins later, bill and change arrives. At least the waiter bothered to smile, how nice ...

I threw change in my pocket, walked out, never to return.

Here's the crux: After the waiter returned with my change, should I have left it there as a tip just to prove that I didn't need the money to buy a bar of chocolate but to show that as a matter of principle restaurants should not rob its customers OR did I do the right thing by pocketing the money since a tip is to be given for good service, for which I was not shown?

We visited this restaurant on Saturday 26th May at lunchtime, and reading the previous reviews I wonder what expectations those criticising Khan's brought with them -given that it is a very low cost restaurant and it is not set up to give you an intimate dining experience with fine cuisine.

We ate for £11 a head including a genuine fresh fruit smoothie for about £2.70.

As with most budget Indian restaurants (in London or India) it is better to stick to the vegetarian food. The breads were delicious. We thought the food was authentic Indian (some of it hot) and enjoyed it, though we would give the meat a miss - just as we wouldn't touch a ready cooked standard supermarket Indian meal because the meat is "factory bred" quality - and you get what you pay for.

The stafff were friendly. Service was fine given the restaurant was half full. They were happy to accomodate a young and at times adventurous child.

The place is a bit on the ancient side but the restaurant and WCs were clean.

Sure, there is room for improvement, but it is not "disgusting", just a budget restaurant doing what it does at a price. We will go back there

ILL PUT IT SIMPLE:

DO NOT GO TO KHAN'S

IT LOOKS NICE FROM THE OUTSIDE BUT WHEN YOU GET INSIDE:

THE WAITERS CANT SPEAK ENGLISH AND CARE MORE ABOUT THE FOOTBALL MATCH THAN THE CUSTOMERS, THE FOOD IS ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING, YOU WILL GET LOST TRYING TO FIND THE TOILETS.

MY ORIGINAL IDEA WAS TO GO TO KISHMISH OR BOMBAY PALACE, EXPECIALLY AFTER LOOKING AT KHANS INCREDIBLY LOW PRICED FOOD (LOW PRICE = LOW QUALITY) BUT WAS CONVINCED INTO GOING TO KHANS, NOW I UNDERSTAND WHY THE FOOD IS SO CHEAP. PLEASE DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID.

I can remember going to this place in the early 80's non vegetarian thali £5.00 WOW!! you could not beat it for value or generous portions...in fact whenever I have a non veg thali now I always use Khans as the yardstick and I am always disappointed at the very few dishes that are invariably served up(At Khans you would get at least 8/9 seperate dishes)

it's a shame that it has got so many negative reviews..with so many bad reports it has obviously deterioated but believe me it used to be a great place to dine for cheap and atmosphere.

Yuk Yuk and Yuk again, I dont understand how people can give this place one star, the food was disgusting ( i can cook better), i have a feeling it was simply re-heated from someone else's previous meal and given to us, i mean how can chicken tikka be done in literally 3 minutes?

I think the curry of the Chicken Jalfrezi was made out of nothing but chillis, my eyes watered and my nose leaked from one mouthful.

The value for money was disgrace, i complere waste of money. The service was disgraceful we were put in the smoking area with two childeren, even after insisting to be moved.

And the Decour? I wount even get started with that, but palm trees and a sky? Honestly?!!!
