TimeOut

Charmaine Mok - 2/5

Wednesday, August 26, 2009 - The menu is features dishes predominantly from the south of France but there are some concessions to Mediterranean flavours, too. We enjoyed a risotto of peas and sorrel topped with fresh sea urchin, a textbook-perfect version. But our mains faltered: the steak was well-presented with a Jenga block of chips and a fragrant, sweet, roasted garlic bulb, but the meat was grossly charred and bitter. The bouillabaisse, with a garlicky rouille and even-more-garlicky croutons, was generous with the seafood but the only other concession the broth had to tasting like the sea was its overwhelming saltiness.

Thursday, July 23, 2009 - Early-years McClements espoused offal and homemade charcuterie. His contemporary style is lighter and in the case of Le Provence fittingly responsive to the warm South and its coastal repertoire...Bouillabaisse was served deconstructed with the selection of fish and shellfish, a jug of potently anise-flavoured broth, croutons, rouille and grated cheese brought to the table to meet and merge. Even if not quite what you might find in Marseille, it came together in a highly satisfactory way. Gutsy braised rabbit with fennel and garlic was served with silky mash and green beans glistening in butter...

My party of 4 last night waited half an hour between starters and main course. No explanation or apology was given. We decided to leave no "Optional Service Charge" because the service was so bad, but leave cash for the waitress because it might not have been her fault. We told the waitress to deduct the service charge. She was surly and unpleasant. I felt entirely uncomfortable. It was a very bad evening. I will not repeat a trip to this poor restaurant.. A great pity. The food and atmosphere were good. The staff were terrible.
