what the critics say
Tuesday, September 02, 2008 - If you only eat one restaurant dish this year, make it the starter of grilled quail at Mien Tay. Spatchcocked and quartered, the delicate meat gets a delicious flavour boost from a mixture of honey, garlic and some subtle spicing.

Walked pass, gave it a try, wish we hadn't. Food tasted average. Not that great compared to other Vietnamese restaurant that we've been to.

Mien Tay
We had a negative experience here, we won't be coming back as we are Vietnamese, and this tasted so disappointing - soup stock didn't taste right, and sauces were too salty! Don't know what happened here.

Absolutely sensational. Didn't realise London served up such great Vietnamese food, though clearly Kingsland Road is no big secret.
The salt, pepper and garlic squid to start was fantastic, with chicken pancakes and beef in betel leaves.
The winner though was the steamed sea bass main course - it's not often that I get out eaten in an Asian restaurant but my two companions devoured most of it in seconds.
We ate plenty but still only paid £15 each. Brilliant value and I will definitely be going back.

London Eater
Friday, October 29, 2010 - Pho: Expectedly cheap at 5.50 but we didn't like it. It was underwhelming. The broth tasted of fat and it was so mild that it may as well be just hot water. Too bland, at least for me. Most disappointing however, were the noodles. The ho fun carried a tinge of bounce, but at the same time, it was soggy...Stir-Fried Goat with Galangal: strong flavour, a distinct sweetness too, like plums, but I felt there was too much spring onion and shallots in this sizzler. The goat meat was about as chewable as latex. I didn't enjoy it at all. I do feel bad having to write about this rather forgettable meal, since staff were such sweet little angels.

Friday, December 05, 2008 - To be fair, our recent meal at Mien Tay wasn’t *all* bad. It just wasn’t as good as it was when we were there in June. The prawn pancake was hot and crispy and full of big, well-cooked (i.e., not mealy and tough) prawns. Our pho was good enough (it’s not Song Que or Huong Viet broth, but at least there’s no mile-long queue like at the former and no crazy-harried-inattentive servers like at the latter). In fact, the service that drove us crazy in June had much improved.
