Mien Tay
what the critics say

I used to live in Hoxton Street and as a result, have spent a lot of time in the Viet restaurants along Kingsland Road. Mien Tay is has recently been taken over by new management and chef and it definitely shows.
It's not as busy as the larger more established restaurants along the street, but I have no idea why as Mien Tay is the best by a mile! The manager is polite and attentive, and the food is superb. It's authentic, cheap and delicious with the menu being slightly more varied and interesting than most of the other restaurants. You can also take your own wine and beer in there, with the manager even opening and pouring your drinks himself!
I recently went there with 8 friends and it came to 10 pounds a head, including 2 courses and a generous tip for the superb manager who served us. We took our own booze in which kept the price down but I seriously can't recommend this place enough, it's fantastic!

I went to Mien Tay for lunch takeout this afternoon on the recommendation of a friend, who said it was the most authentic and southern style of all those Kingsland Rd. restaurants. I enjoyed it so much that I had to spread the word!
It was sad to see the place empty (which I guess is unsurprising for lunch), but the space was small and quaint and I would have enjoyed eating in. A bit of a change from the other restaurants on the street which seem to have resorted to cafeteria-type serving because of the hordes from Shoreditch weekend nights out. The site is under new management and chef, and I never went to the old place, but this was absoluately superb. I had the 'bun cha gio nem nuong', which was easily the best I've had from all the restaurants on the street, and quite possibly all the Viet restaurants in London!
