I ate here back in October '10, the previous visit having been about a year earlier. I am sorry to report that standards appear to have slipped. Our first visit was filled with hearty food, good beer and a general feeling of a job well done. Our second visit was made up of disappointment in the main as both the food and the service appear to have taken a turn for the distinctly average. My meal arrived whilst not cold certainly a long way from hot, whilst my partner's failed to turn up at all. When we pressed them they delivered the wrong dish! The waitress was apologetic not least since the original order then needed to be prepared 'from scratch' and consequently I had long since finished mine before hers arrived. No refund or discount, just a mumbled apology.

The location is great and even though it is not cheap for what is after all a very basic service, I remember thinking after our first meal that Steins had the balance about right. On the strength of our last outing the see-saw has tipped the other way and it now feels like you're paying over the odds for the setting and novelty factor.

I sincerely hope that Steins up their game before the summer to avoid the restaurant being added to the long list of those guilty of resting on their laurels.

as a real "Bavarian girl" who lives since a couple of years in the UK I can say Stein´s is good place to go for finding some good traditional food.

It is quite far out of London but the atmosphere is just brilliant. The beergarden is next to the river Thames and gives you nice view on the boats which are passing by.

The system for ordering food is a bit annoying but ok. The food was good. It was a good change to English sausages. Unfortunate was only that I had the feeling that the "Sauerkraut" seemed to be out of the can. Beside that I really enjoyed my dish.

The beer was nice and chilled and just fit perfect in a sunny beergarden day.

The prices are a bit higher but to be fair the probably have to import most of the food from Germany so fair enough to pay a little bit extra.

I really enjoyed to have a real Brezn and a good Brotzeit.

I don´t go there every day so it is ok to take the journey and pay a little bit more than otherwise.

Everyone who misses bavarian food should go there!

Don't go when it's busy, the bizarre system of having two queues means that you just stand waiting for a beer while people argue with each other about which queue is which.

Avoid.

Tamarind and Thyme

Tamarind and Thyme

Sunday, September 27, 2009 - To drink, I had an Almdudler sparkling herbal lemonade imported from Austria; it tasted like a slightly gingery lemonade - gorgeous stuff...To eat, we ordered a Bavarian Sharer platter for 2. While the little Nurnberg bratwursts weren't up to scratch, the Polish style one and the big Thuringer bratwurst were both delicious, as were the Polish sausage and the bacon. The bacon was actually sublime - porky and meaty and a far cry from the watery specimens found at most supermarkets...
