This Is London

Chris Blackhurst - 3/5

Wednesday, September 17, 2008 - Opening a restaurant in London is a gamble at the best of times, but doing one now requires a special sort of courage or madness — or both. This thought sticks with me as we’re shown to our table at the new Brasserie James on Balham Hill.

A quick headcount reveals 12 covers, including ourselves. To be fair, it’s mid-week, but even so, this is a 46-seat establishment...

We've been here for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Whilst the food and atmosphere have always been good, the service is unbelievably slow. Such as everytime we went back we thought it would be a one off - very understaffed.

I have been to Brasserie James five times in the last three months...unimaginative? Perhaps, but the food is fantastic and the outstanding deal of 6 courses for £6 on a Monday or Tuesday is enough to make anyone return with such regularity! Yes, that is correct, six courses for a mere £6, and although the courses are of course by no means large, they certainly leave you more than satisfied. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

We've been to this place twice now and will be going back. It has a nice atmosphere, is smart without being pretentious, and the service is good. Last night the food was great - pate, which was lovely, and a deep fried veggie tortelloni which was really tasty (although needed a bit more sauce). For mains we had pork belly which was fantastic and perfectly cooked, with great crackling. The tagliatelle was also lovely. The bread is some of the best I've ever had in a restaurant, and is served with butter rather than olive oil and vinegar which is a nice change. Didn't have our first choice of wine but the replacement was very nice indeed and they charged the same price as the original. However, there was no port left, even though there is a cheese board on the dessert menu. The creme brulee was exquisite!

Overall a great experience, value for money, and we will return.
