Malaysia Hall Canteen

This must be the only students canteen to feature in a restaurant guide but why?! This isn't a public restaurant with decor, waiters etc but it is self service with a plastic tray catering for Malaysia Hall students (so yeah, the name ain't being hip - it means what it says!!). Non Malaysians should be accompanied by a Malaysian as some staff don't speak english and the menu is Halal Malay (with the odd extra i.e. Tom Yam) thrown in. I had this lunch Roti Canai (£2.50 avg); Ayam Laksa (£4.50 - poor) and Nasi Lemak (poor) + Sotong (good) and Udang curry (avg) together for £7.50. And a mini donut (good). To me the main appeal of this place is not the food but for Malaysians who want to hook up with each other in central london, read Malay newspapers and chit chat about home. The pace is kampong style i.e. slow mo at times (you may have to clear your own table - cos the guy who's supposed to be doing it is outside having a chit chat). Try and avoid main meal times cos there's only about 8 tables. If want Malaysian food in a restuarant setting then try somewhere else but if you want to sample Malaysia before a holiday come here cos it's cheaper than a plane ticket - so maybe every country should have a place like this attached to it's embassy!

nasi lemak was more rempah than lemak and the sambal was bitter, kuih bakar and kuih bingkai was good...

self service...and it seems when it's not busy the staff are more relaxed about 10 minutes to serve a precook nasi lemak

canteen style and clean and can meet malaysians

i guess kiasu malaysian says it's good because of the price, sorry

will go again if salary is bank in late next time. u guys can do better...
