My girlfriend and I found ourselves in Sevenoaks on our way elsewhere and were looking for a reasonable bite. House on the Hill was recommended by a friend as quiet and unpretentious, with decent food. And it most certainly was.
The setting is cosy and intimate, the staff friendly and efficient, and the food a totally unexpected pleasure. Would it make sense if I said the chef has a rare delicacy of touch?
There are two menus: a tapas-style list and a full a-la-carte. Going for the latter we shared a squid, pork belly and chick-pea starter where the squid was fresh and the pork belly melt-in-the-mouth tender, the overall effect being absolutely delicious.
She then had steak (good meat cooked a very respectable medium-rare, with excellent chips) and I had the fish of the day: sea trout flash pan-fried so the skin was crisp and loose yet the middle perfectly succulent, with freshly-made salsas.
On first picking up the menu the pricing seemed keen (c.£13-18 / main), but actually this is excellent value for the quality of the experience. All I can say is this place is a great find and highly recommended to anyone who enjoys their food.
