Benito's Hat Restaurant In London

Marina O'Loughlin - 5/5

Tuesday, September 23, 2008 - Benito's Hat – it's named after extravagantly titfered Mexican national hero Benito Juárez – is the baby of Ben Fordham, whose burrito epiphany came in Texas, not California, an enthusiasm that took him as far as cooking school in Oaxaca. He's a dedicated chap, tracking down a 'fantastic' supplier of fresh chillies in Bedfordshire who grows not only habaneros, jalapenos and serranos but also the tomatillos needed for a salsa verde with depth and tang.

A nice alternative for lunch or a quick snack. My impression was that it was like a Mexican Subway with booze available and a slightly higher quality of produce. But it's all dolled out Subway style.

Prompted by the media hype and curiosity, I went there with a friend earlier tonight. Long queue as one would expect, the food just about made it worth the while. Authentic and cheap (£5!!!), but they need a bigger venue: quite a few people left before it was their turn... Anyhow, give it a try...

Great burritos and tacos - great tasting beef, salsa verde and guac. Excellent Mexican fast food the way it should be. This will be a chain....

Gourmet Chick - 7/10

Wednesday, October 15, 2008 - When you are ordering it is hard to go past the burritos which are huge servings. Ben, the owner who has thrown in life as a tax lawyer to start up Benito's Hat (clearly a hero for all frustrated wage slaves) recommends the pork. You can design your own burrito at the counter so I got my soft floury burrito packed with shreds of pork, pungent black beans, cheese, sour cream, tangy salsa, rice and creamy guacamole. The girl serving me asked if I wanted sour cream or cheese. I had not realised this was an "or" question. Clearly both are mandatory.
