Monday, December 06, 2010 - Our burritos turn up looking like big silver bombs. These boys are enormous; a 12-inch floury and soft tortilla wraps a mega-mix of meat plus beans, rice, lettuce, cheese, sour cream and salsa and more besides...The lamb is excellent, a smoky flavour and a glorious tenderness, all offset by the starchy beans, the piquant salsa and the sour cream. We have half a one each and then eat the steak version, which is very good but the lamb is the winner by a woolly nose. Great value and very filling.

Tuesday, September 23, 2008 - Benito's Hat – it's named after extravagantly titfered Mexican national hero Benito Juárez – is the baby of Ben Fordham, whose burrito epiphany came in Texas, not California, an enthusiasm that took him as far as cooking school in Oaxaca. He's a dedicated chap, tracking down a 'fantastic' supplier of fresh chillies in Bedfordshire who grows not only habaneros, jalapenos and serranos but also the tomatillos needed for a salsa verde with depth and tang.

These burritos are HUGE!! Stuffed full of rice, beans, guac, salad and i always get extra 'salsa del diablo' to make it really spicy! I normally spend are £10 so it's not the cheapest lunch, but the sheer size of them make it worth it when you can spend £6 for a small sandwich in the nearby cafes! Which arent half as tasty! Great staff, friendly atmos and clean.

We started going to Benitos Hat when it first opened. My partner and I only eat free-range meat, so before we went we asked whether they used free-range chicken. They said yes. Great.

We have been about half a dozen times over the last two years, but recently I noticed standards slipping and had a less pleasant experience.

So, I emailed them (three times before I got a response) to ask them whether they did use free-range chicken, and it turns out they don't.

I don't know if I was misinformed the first time I asked, or whether they have driven standards down in order to expand. Either way - I'm not impressed, and won't go back.

Wonderful place for a takeaway, I use it frequently. However I would never dine in there, why do they have to ruin it by playing 'music' so loudly that I have to shout to the staff to make myself heard?

It's almost impossible to go anywhere now without being having to yell over noise but Benito's Hat (Goodge Street anyway) should be referred to the noise team.

Wednesday, October 15, 2008 - When you are ordering it is hard to go past the burritos which are huge servings. Ben, the owner who has thrown in life as a tax lawyer to start up Benito's Hat (clearly a hero for all frustrated wage slaves) recommends the pork. You can design your own burrito at the counter so I got my soft floury burrito packed with shreds of pork, pungent black beans, cheese, sour cream, tangy salsa, rice and creamy guacamole. The girl serving me asked if I wanted sour cream or cheese. I had not realised this was an "or" question. Clearly both are mandatory.
